Hackett told NBC's Matt Lauer that Peterson spends most of his time in a tiny cell. He is in the East Block of the prison, along with 65 to 80 other inmates. There are about 600 people, in total, on Death Row.
"He has a small 13-inch TV, eight CDs, six books," Hackett said. He said Peterson most recently was reading a book by author Raoul Dahl.
Because of his notoriety, Hackett said, Peterson chooses to spend his time alone and has only gone outside into the prison yard a couple of times, to walk alone. The yard has a spartan exercise area, with just a chin bar and a basketball hoop.
Corrections officers told the magazine that Peterson is polite and says "good morning" and "thank you."
"The warden says he's flirtatious with the women and lights up when he sees female corectional officers," Hackett told Lauer. About a quarter of the prison's officers are women.
Lauer asked about "fan mail" to Peterson, who was convicted of killing his pregnant wife. Hackett said that when Peterson was first transferred to death row, he got as many as 85 letters a week. The mail slowed down, but Peterson then posted a letter on an anti-death-penalty site in Canada and began again to get dozens of letters a week.
Hackett said Peterson has a nickname that he seems proud of -- "Scottie True Hottie" -- that was given to him by one of the poeple who wrote him.
"He lets people (in the prison) know what he is called," Hackett said about the nickname.
Peterson is allowed visitors four times a week for up to three hours. There are 20 people on his "approved list," including family, friends and lawyers. His parents visit as much as much as once a week, driving the 500 miles or so from their San Diego home, Hackett said, and they still believe their son is not guilty and will have his name cleared on appeal.
Meanwhile, Peterson's former girlfriend, Amber Frey, says she has forgiven Scott and does not think about him -- even though she still speaks publicly about the case.
Hackett said it's his impression that Frey is taking advantage of her temporary notoriety to "get her family together." He said Frey has bought land near Fresno and is building a spa or massage center there and has broken up with the father of her second child.
