I recently put up a thread at the other site to see if pros and antis could present an alter ego with the opposing viewpoint in the DP deabate. I presented my anti-alterego Missy and here is her anti-DP position. NO! i don't have a split prsonality and no one else does here, but i'm sure all of us are capable of presenting the opposing view in a convincing manner, although in the final analysis it's not our prevailing viewpoint!

Missy:
It's an insult to grieving MVSs to in any way suggest that the execution of the murderer of their murdered loved one will heal the wounds. That's like saying hey "Your loved one was worth a certain price, which we're going to pay or compensate with by executing this evil "*§ß#"-aint that a good deal, one for one?"
The fact is the murderer has so cheapened him/herself with their act and thus reduced their social value so immensely that it is an insult to the MVSs to mention the name of this "*§ß#"- in the same breath with the name of the victim. Why then shouldn't the murderer be executed? Because his/her name will only be linked further to the victim's name with this brutalising ritual. Society should be spared this and the murderer sentenced to LWOP in a dark, spartanic prison and should he then slip on a bar of soap there and break his neck then frankly i couldn't care less because my love and my sense of the priority here is with the rest of humanity.
A more compelling pro argument is the deterrence arguement claiming that the death penalty is a greater deterrent than LWOP. Even if this is to some extent true the benefit would be counteracted by the brutalisation effect of the DP. If we execute presumed criminals in our own country our inhibitions about executing presumed criminals in foreign countries will likewise be lessened. The brutal ritual of execution in pro DP nations just seems to invariable generate an agressive foreign policy. Deterring murder with executions is like pressing down on a waterbed, around the point an impact an impression may be made, but everywhere else the waterbed bulges ouitwardly. This is symbolically the same effect that the DP achieves. I respect greatly those who wish to deter future murders, but the DP is a deceptively defective tool to achieve this.
As far as the plea bargain argument for the DP goes, e.g. the assertions that only the DP threat induced the green river killer to lead police to the bodies of his victims. Why not pressure these murderers into giving desired information by depriving them of all priviledges and extra comfort in prison until they give this information. Can anyone tell me why this isn't being done already?
Regarding the incapacitation argument, the argument that murderers will murder again. I suggest potentially violent criminals be segerated as is usually the case. Instead however of having a regular prison guards deal with these violent criminals up close another prisoner could be entrusted with this guard duty. A small clique of "convict prison guards" would create this "buffer zone" between the worst of the worst and the regular prison guards, who have their families waiting at home for them.
Be thankful that my big sister is a pro and holds me back or I'd wipe the floor with a lot of you out there! ;D ;D ;D ;D
