I am of the opinion that even prisoners on Death row should be allowed to work on their educations. They should be allowed to have access to teachers, if not in the cell blocks, that one can collect their work, grade it, and send it back with feedback. This should hold true for at least a GED. If they want college credit, they should have to pay for it just as anyone else. Now, lets start the debate...

That would be so wonderful.... I agree and I can't understand why at least a basic high school education wouldn't be made available...

Yes I definately agree that they should be able to continue their education. Effectively this would only make them better, more knowledgeable people, so where's the harm in that?

Great subject Mike.
I whole heartedly agree, these guys are in a cell for 23 hours EVERY DAY. This would truly help them in so many ways. Everyone should be entitled to education.
Sadly in Texas, this is not permitted. Even if it was, knowing the way the system works, the Guards would 'love' to take this 'privilage' away in a heart beat. Well some would at least. Just to take away something else from the inmate. It's cruel.
Best

Give them a Bible or Koran whichever they prefer to read, and that should be it! Why waste money on education? P.S. I thought some of you antis proposed to "make them sit in their cell for the rest of their lives thinking about what they had done". This is exactly what we pros have been saying all along, after abolition of the death penalty next will be LWOP and then it will go on to giving the most evil prisoners a more comfortable time in prison as they do in the EU!

Lol
Yes sit in their cells is thats what they will do and what i want them to do, if they want to study, fine! My guess is you don't understand why a DR prisoner would want to do that. Prison is never comfortable, it is about taking ones freedom away.

Also, i'm not moving towards other issue's 'after the DP is abolished', as the DP is for the worst of the worst, LWOP should be too. Mandatory LWOP for murder i disagree with, this has nothing to do with the pro or anti DP

I do not mind education and I do not mind it if a prisoner should be following the rules, should have more priviledges and things in his cell... I mean, he is not going to have a Laz-e-boy recliner in there, nor a large plasma screen TV...

I say let them learn or whatever but how does a guy who is sitting in a cell going to pay for college courses on his own? I'm sure that most of his suporters are using money to pay his legal fees. If DR inmate can't work where would he get the money? Does he get a credit card? Or does he have to get a bunch of penpal girlfriends or marry some rich woman to front him some cash. The money would better used on candy bars or underwear.

Allowed to get an education but not at the expense of the taxpayers. If they want an education then they should figure out how to pay for it.

Their parents or family can pay for it. Just like everyone else.
