BY JAMES LOEWENSTEIN 06/02/2005
State police said they will attempt DNA testing to determine whose body parts were found Sunday on an island in the Susquehanna River near Standing Stone Township.
It is not yet known how long ago the person died, or whether the person was male or female, said state Trooper Robert McKee, who is based in North Towanda. McKee declined to comment at this time on whether the body parts were just bones, or whether there was flesh present as well. State police will attempt to have DNA testing done on the body parts, he said. "Whether it will be successful or not, I don't know," he said.
A work boot containing a partially decomposed human foot and lower leg bones was discovered by a canoeist on an island in the Susquehanna River near Standing Stone Township at about 5 p.m. Sunday, state police said. The foot and shin bones were intact inside a gray, blue and yellow-striped athletic sock, police said. Another bone fragment, two pieces of rusty metal, and Chap Stick lip balm were also recovered, but a search of the island revealed no other findings, according to state police.
State police will probably have an anthropologist evaluate the body parts to determine their age, McKee said. The New York State Police contract with anthropologists, he said. "We will contact them to see if we (can use them) to determine how old it is." McKee said it is not yet known if foul play was involved in the person's death.
Two women from Barton, N.Y. - Melissa Humphrey and her mother, Patricia Vanderpool - have said they suspect the body parts belong to Eli Vanderpool Jr. of Barton, who has been missing since Nov. 26, 1985. Eli Vanderpool Jr. is Melissa Humphrey's brother.
Eli Vanderpool was last seen at a party at a home in Smithboro, N.Y., according to Humphrey. Days after he was last seen, a truck that had been at the party was pulled out of the Susquehanna River in front of the Vanderpools' home in Barton, according to Humphrey.
Patricia Vanderpool had said that Eli Vanderpool always carried a Chap Stick with him and that he was wearing work boots the day he was last seen alive. McKee said it is not known yet whether the Chap Stick was with the body parts or whether it washed up on the island separately. As to whether the body parts belong to Eli Vanderpool, "that's information that would have to be determined through DNA and anthropological testing," McKee said.
McKee said he was not sure which lab would do the DNA testing. Depending on which lab was chosen, and its caseload, it could take weeks or even months to get the DNA test results, he said.

She hasn't been seen since she left work in Montgomery in March, but her family is still hoping she'll come home soon. Brianna's father, Bruce Maitland, said he's found that time does not bring healing. "I've found it's the other way. It's actually getting harder and harder," Maitland said. "The hardest thing is the change of seasons, rather than the date, for me. This is the first real day of fall weather and there is another season that's gone by without her -- and that's very difficult." On March 19, police found Brianna's car crashed backwards into the side of an abandoned farmhouse in Montgomery. Her pay stub from work, some money and her license were left behind in the car, but Brianna had vanished. Hundreds of volunteers covered hundreds of acres, with the help of a national search organization, but didn't find the girl. "In some ways, we're no closer now than we were the first day or two we knew she was missing," Maitland said. Every lead has turned cold; every detail remains a mystery. But Maitland said he won't give up. "No, you never, ever give up," Maitland said. "To my daughter: I love you so much. I'll come get you. You figure out a way to call me and I'll be there." www.thechamplainchannel.com/news/3743877/detail.html A friend of the family is making this request...please help: "The Caledonian Record is currently running a poll through Saturday, January 1 for the most important story of the past year. Options are: The Phish concert. Red Sox win the world series. The Devenger brothers. The disappearances of Maura Murray and Brianna Maitland. Currently votes for the disappearance of Maura and Brianna are next to last. Please, let's let the readers in NH and VT know that we place more importance on life than sports or concerts. Please go to www.caledonianrecord.com/ to vote. Thank you on behalf of the Murray and Maitland families." State police search land, water for missing teen Written by Jedd Kettler Thursday, 19 May 2005 BERKSHIRE: State police drew the attention of area residents Tuesday, May 17, when they brought special diving and canine units to the northern end of Berkshire’s Reservoir Road to search for Brianna Maitland. Maitland has been missing since Friday, March 19, 2004, when she was last seen leaving work at the Black Lantern Inn restaurant in Montgomery. There were about 25 police officers and rescue workers involved in combing the land and searching a pond in the area beginning Tuesday morning. It was not new information that brought police out to search the area at this time, said Lt. Brian Miller, of the St. Albans barracks of the Vermont State Police (VSP). “We don’t have any direct evidence (connecting the area),” said Miller, who is the detective overseeing the investigation. The area, which consists of several acres of woodland, wetland and a pond, is one in a long list of locations and information that police are continuing to follow-up in the case. “It’s just kind of been on our list of things that we’ve wanted to check,” Miller said. “It’s just part of the continuing investigation. We have a lot of things that we’d like to do on the case.”<br>Miller said Tuesday’s scrutiny of the area came because of an opportunity to combine resources from training and other sources in conjunction with favorable seasonal conditions. Such investigations can be weather and manpower dependent, Miller said. Police wanted to search the woodlands and pond before leaves had completely budded out, he said. So when the divers were scheduled for training this week and the extra canine units were available, they “felt it was prudent to search here,” he said. “It worked out well that they could do their training here,” Miller said. The diving team is training with Colchester Rescue. The special canine unit, with two dogs and two officers, came up from the Connecticut State Police, he said. They are different than canine units regularly available to the barracks because they are trained to follow a specific human scent. Tuesday’s search turned up nothing new. Anyone with information regarding the disappearance of Brianna Maitland should contact the VSP at 802-524-5993, or call Bruce and Kellie Maitland, Brianna’s parents, at xxx-xxx-xxxx or go to www.bringbrihome.org. The family is also offering a $10,000 reward for her safe return or information that helps convict those responsible for her disappearance. www.thecountycourier.com/index.php?...id=1663&Itemid= Reward Increases In Year-Old Missing Person Case Montgomery, Vermont - June 3, 2005 The family of Brianna Maitland has doubled the reward for information leading to her whereabouts. Brianna Maitland disappeared a year ago after finishing her shift at the Black Lantern Inn in Montgomery. While her car has been found, there has been no sign of Maitland. The family is now offering 20-thousand dollars for information which may lead to Maitland's exact location. www.wcax.com/Global/story.asp?S=3426709&nav=4QcSacEn

She was attending the game with her mother and had joined some friends to catch lightning bugs. Morgan was last seen standing near her mother's car where she had stopped to empty sand from her shoes. Witnesses observed a man watching the youngster as she was playing with other children at the park. The witness also saw a red Ford pickup with a white camper parked nearby that disappeared at about the same time as the girl. The camper is possibly damaged at the right rear, and was described as four or five inches too short for the truck, which has a short wheel base and paint dulled by age. The truck is believed to have Arkansas license plates. The man was described as white, 6 feet tall, with a medium to solid build, a mustache and a 1-inch beard. He is believed to be 23-38 years old with black or "salt and pepper" hair, combed to the back, possibly curly. Click HERE to see a composite sketch. Morgan is approximately 4 feet tall, about 55 pounds, has blonde hair and blue eyes. Morgan has 5 visible silver caps on her molars. She was last seen wearing a green Girl Scout t-shirt, blue denim shorts and white tennis shoes. A massive investigation has turned up thousands of leads, but still no solid clues to the whereabouts of Morgan Nick or her abductor. The FBI and local communities have offered a $60,000 reward for the recovery of Morgan Chauntel Nick and the identification, arrest and conviction of subject or subjects responsible for her abduction. The search continues to move forward. There have been numerous possible sightings of Morgan across the United States. Morgan's parents believe that Morgan is still alive and hope that with continued media coverage, someone will be able to provide them with information that could bring their daughter home. On June 9, 1995, Alma police say six-year-old Morgan was kidnapped from the local ballpark. Since then they've worked on countless leads, but investigators are still asking for your help. Efforts to find Morgan began 11:00 on a Friday night, on that day Colleen Nick wasted no time getting her message to the public. In an early interview with Today’s THV she said, “I would tell Morgan that I love you, and we are looking for you so hard so you can come home.” Colleen Nick’s message hasn’t changed. It’s been a decade, but time has not taken its toll on her resolve to find her daughter. At a media conference Wednesday, she said, “Morgan is 16 years old now. She should be with us planning her senior year of high school, you know, getting ready for her prom. And the reality is - is that we are left here with memories of Morgan at six years old, learning to ride a bicycle." Police say Morgan was with two other children the night she was taken and that they, along with an adult witness, were able to provide enough detail for a composite sketch of the suspect. Investigators continue to get at least one lead a day. Chief Russell White says, "You know it's like a puzzle and sometimes you don't have the whole picture until you have the one piece that fits in." Colleen Nick says, "In 10 years not knowing where Morgan is and not knowing what's happened to your child - it will wear your soul out." But she’ll look for Morgan no matter how long it takes to find her. "You know, for me it's not a choice to keep hoping, to keep fighting. I made that choice the day Morgan was born." Jones has been held in Mo bile County Metro Jail since he was arrested in September 2004 and charged with Nichols' death in Turnerville. Authorities in Mobile have said Jones confessed to killing Nichols and setting her mobile home afire in an attempt to destroy evidence. Law enforcement officers from other states have said he has confessed to at least four other slayings -- two more in Oklahoma, one in Louisiana and one in Georgia. He faces a capital murder charge in connection with the death of a New Orleans prostitute. He is charged with murder in the slaying of a Georgia teenager. An Oklahoma newspaper reported in mid May that Jones confessed to two murders in Commerce, Okla., but the police chief in that town said he was skeptical of Jones' story. Sooter expressed some skepticism about Jones' claims. "I'm not positive I can believe his confession, but he was very adamant," Sooter said. Charging Jones in the murders was not as important to him as finding the girls' bodies, Sooter said, noting he will concentrate his efforts that. "We are planning a search for them during the third or fourth week in June. We have not decided yet," Craig said. He believes the bodies most likely were dumped in neighboring Cherokee County, Kan., which is pocked with old mine shafts. Craig said agents of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation will assist in the search which will be aided by cadaver detecting dogs and a radar device that can find buried bodies. "We have narrowed it down to three or four locations in Kansas," Sooter said. Read Complete Article: www.al.com/news/mobileregister/inde...ll=3&thispage=2

ASHTON THOMAS MISSING, GRUNDY, ILFamily Searches for Missing Boy Posted: May 31, 2005 The search for a missing boy from Northern Illinois brings a family searching for answers to Coles County. Family members say on March 21st 5-year-old Ashton Thomas was kidnapped from a preschool in Grundy County Illinois by his non-custodial mother. The family is now asking for your help to bring Ashton home safe. Family members of Ashton Thomas traveled from one Charleston business to another Tuesday hoping to find a clue as to where his mother might have taken him. Ashton's Grandfather Dale Thomas says it's been a nightmare for his family. Ashton's non custodial mother Desera Bennett is accused of kidnapping him from a Northern Illinois preschool in March. Family members say two weeks ago the mother was spotted staying in Room 11 at the Varsity Inn in Charleston. Dale Thomas says just two days ago Ashton was spotted with his mother at a Charleston grocery store. The family says they're worried an uncle traveling with the boy could be sexually assaulting him. Dale Thomas says the uncle was suppose to attend a meeting with the Department of Children and Family Services, around the same time Desera kidnapped the child. Ashton's grandma Nancy Thomas says she doesn't even like to think about what could be happening. Charleston Police say they've conducted a full search for the boy, but believe he has left the area. Officer Carl Daniels says all of there leads are over a week old. Family members say it's not too late for Ashton's mother to stop running. Police say an Amber Alert was not issued in this case because the child was not considered endangered at the time he went missing. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services says they did not investigate Ashton's uncle. Police have issued an arrest warrant for his mother on charges of Felony Child Abduction. If you've seen Ashton Thomas his family says you should call 911. www.weiu.net/news/archive/newsbuild.../missingboy.htm

CORRINE ERSTAD MISSING, INVER GROVE HEIGHTS, MNCorrine Leanne Erstad Missing since June 1, 1992 from Inver Grove Heights, Dakota County, Minnesota. Classification: Non-Family Abduction Vital Statistics Date Of Birth: February 17, 1987 Age at Time of Disappearance: 5 years old Height and Weight at Time of Disappearance: 3'2; 40 lbs. Distinguishing Characteristics: White female. Brown hair; brown eyes. Marks, Scars: Erstad has scars on her forehead, left ring finger, lip and close to her left eye. Clothing: She was wearing a white sundress imprinted with watermelon designs. Circumstances of Disappearance Erstad was last seen at approximately 7:30 PM on June 1, 1992 as she went to play in Skyline Park near her home in Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota. Her two brothers walked to the park to bring her back home after she had been gone for five minutes. A friend of the Erstads, Robert Guevara was viewed as the main suspect in her disappearance from the beginning. Guevara often stayed overnight at the family's home. Often in the same bed as Erstad. Guevara was at her home the day she was reported as missing. He was charged with her kidnapping, rape and murder on June 5, 1992. Authorities discovered a dress identical to the one that Erstad was last seen wearing and a pair of girl's underpants inside Guevara's locker. The clothing had been stained with blood and semen. Bloodstains were also discovered on a shower curtain inside Guevara's trailer. DNA testing showed that it could have come from both Erstad and Guevara. Defense argued at Guevara's trial that his locker and trailer were not secured and that the evidence could have been planted to frame Guevara for Erstad's disappearance. Minnesota law did not allow full usage of DNA evidence at trials in 1992. As a result, Guevara was acquitted of all charges. He has continued to maintain his innocence. Investigators If you have any information concerning this case, please contact: Inver Grove Heights Police Department Missing Persons Unit 651-450-2525 NCIC Number: M-569909933 Please refer to this number when contacting any agency with information regarding this case. THE DOE NETWORK Father still haunted by missing daughter, 13 years later Associated Press Posted on Sun, May. 29, 2005 INVER GROVE HEIGHTS - Corrine Erstad would be an 18-year-old woman now, but her father can only imagine what might have been. Jim Erstad continues to be haunted by his little girl's mysterious disappearance 13 years ago. "I'd like to be with her. I'd like to see her. I know she would have been beautiful," he said. In a highly publicized case, Corrine was abducted from her Inver Grove Heights home on June 1, 1992, when she was 5 years old. She is presumed to be dead, but her body has never been found and nobody has been convicted of the crime. Former family friend Robert Guevara was acquitted in a sensational trial, and the lack of closure has eaten away at the girl's family. Jim Erstad can't bear to have pictures of Corrine at his home in Savage and rarely talks about her with his two sons. Corrine's mother, Mona Williams, called 911 on that fateful day to report that her daughter was missing. A massive search and $500,000 investigation turned up a bloodstained sun dress in a storage locker rented by Guevara, but no body. A jury in 1993 acquitted Guevara of murder, kidnapping and sexual assault charges, largely because Corrine's body was not found. Corrine's family has struggled to deal with the grief. Her parents were divorced long before Corrine was abducted. Jim Erstad has multiple sclerosis and lives on Social Security disability payments. Williams lives out of state with her husband and rarely talks to Erstad. Corrine's older brothers, 21-year-old Jacob and 19-year-old Danny, have been in and out of trouble. Both lived with their father for a while before leaving after clashes over house rules. Danny lives with friends in Oregon and Jacob, his father said, "is basically homeless. Sometimes he sleeps in my car if I leave the garage unlocked." When the Erstad men do get together, talk rarely turns toward Corrine. "Part of the reason we don't bring her up a lot is we don't need the pain," Jim Erstad said. "We've got enough." Corrine's family members aren't the only ones still pained by the case. Inver Grove Heights Police Chief Chuck Kleckner was a sergeant at the time of the disappearance and said he wants the case closed "before I leave the department." "It was a tough thing to go through, for the officers, for the family and the whole city, for that matter," Kleckner said. "Periodically, we'll get tips. They are generally few and far between at this point. If we get any tips or leads, we're going to follow up on it." That's all Jim Erstad can ask as he hopes to one day find out what really happened to his little girl. Meanwhile, the struggle to deal with the grief continues. "Grief is grief," he said. "If you've got a chunk out of your leg, you might not think about it all the time. But you're going to walk funny. You're going to limp." www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/news/11770626.htm

Newport resident Scott Pietsch said his daughter, Lindsey Pietsch, should have been attending first grade at Sam Case Elementary School this year. But he has not seen Lindsey since last summer, and it is believed the girl was taken from the area by her mother. A Lincoln County judge awarded Pietsch sole custody of Lindsey in January, after Pietsch's ex-wife, Heidi Yvonne Pietsch, failed to make two scheduled court hearings as part of the couple's divorce proceedings. Scott Pietsch said he doesn't know where his ex-wife may have taken their daughter, but he believes they could be in California. Flyers containing information about his missing daughter had been posted by Pietsch in businesses around the Newport area, but he said someone had taken these down. He believes that was done by family members of his ex-wife, and he filed a complaint with the Newport Police Department. Newport Police Chief Mark Miranda said his officers had investigated the incident, but it was determined this was a civil issue, and no crime had been committed. Oregon State Police Detective Dan Wolverton, based in OSP's Springfield office, has been assigned to this missing person case. He confirmed that Lindsey has officially been listed as a missing person and this was done after the child had already been taken by her mother. "There is still an investigation going on with our department," Wolverton said, "but at this point, it hasn't been determined whether there are any charges being pursued or anything like that. Basically, all we're doing is having a missing person entry made and are doing whatever appropriate follow-up needs to be done if we have leads. "It is a custody dispute more than anything else," added Wolverton. "There's no information that the child is in danger or anything like that." Lindsey Pietsch was born April 7, 1998. She has light brown hair, blue eyes, is 3-feet 4-inches tall, and weighs 42 pounds. She was last seen in the Roseburg area and has been missing since July 11, 2004. Information about Lindsey was placed in the Law Enforcement Data System on March 23, and soon thereafter, she was added to the registry of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Additional information about Lindsey is available on the Internet at www.missingkids.org. www.newportnewstimes.com/articles/2...news/news22.txt

JENNIFER FAY MISSING, BROCKTON, MAJENNIFER FAY Description: DOB: Dec 25, 1972 Missing: Nov 14, 1989 Age Now: 32 Sex: Female Race: White Hair: Blonde Eyes: Blue Height: 5'4" (163 cm) Weight: 90 lbs (41 kg) Missing From: BROCKTON, MA United States Circumstances: Jennifer's photo is shown age-progressed to 32 years. She was last seen leaving her home. She has a scar over her eyebrow. Contact information: Brockton Police Department (Massachusetts) - Missing Persons Unit 1-508-941-0200 National Center for Missing & Exploited Children 1-800-843-5678 (1-800-THE-LOST) NCMEC POSTER whereisjennifer.org Police Take New Look At 1989 Missing Teen Case Jennifer Fay, 16, Last Seen Going To Party 15 Years Ago POSTED: 1:00 pm EDT April 22, 2005 BROCKTON, Mass. -- More than 15 years after a Bay State teenager disappeared, investigators are more convinced than ever that Jennifer Fay was the victim of foul play. NewsCenter 5's Liz Brunner reported that Fay was last seen at her home in Brockton in 1989. But now, thanks to five private investigators working for free, Fay's case is back in the forefront. "People never forget. You will never find someone who will totally forget what happened to Jennifer Fay," said private investigator Joseph White. The 16-year-old blond-haired, blue-eyed Brockton teen was last seen Nov. 16, 1989. She headed out to a party, never to be seen or heard from again. "It's been hell waking up every day not knowing, waiting for her to come home. Waiting to hear something," said Fay's mother, Dottie MacLean. Fay had run away before, but her mother said this time was different. "She'd always call and she always came home. This time she just didn't," said MacLean. "A runaway will usually turn up at some point in time somewhere. It's been 15 years, there's been no sign, no contact, nothing," said private investigator Phil White. "Sad to say, but we are fairly certain there is foul play involved." Putting in about 1,000 hours since February, the investigators have been working pro-bono on unsolved missing children's cases. In this case, they've identified more than 200 people they want to talk to. "What they need is someone like us to sit down with them and say, 'It's been 15 years. It's time for you to tell us those things that maybe you couldn't tell us, or were afraid to tell us, or just didn't want to tell us 15 years ago,'" said Joseph White. "This particular case has all the earmarkings of a real good screenplay -- sex, drugs and rock and roll," said Phil White. "She was running with a pretty fast crowd, and a fast crowd does not want to say too much about what they were doing." The investigators are determined to find out what happened to the teenager. "It may take a month, but our profession dictates we find an answer to that question," said Joseph White. The investigators said they are learning new information about the case every day. "If anyone does know anything, to please contact us, and let us find her, it's been too long," said MacLean. All five investigators volunteer to work on missing children cases for the Molly Bish Foundation. www.thebostonchannel.com/news/4406911/detail.html 'I just want to find her and bring her home' By Maureen Boyle, Enterprise staff writer Monday, May 16, 2005 Jennifer Lynn Fay is one of the thousands of names entered into the nationwide database of missing persons. But her mother knows it will be people searching woods, divers in the water and specially trained dogs sniffing four spots in three communities later this month that may offer the best chance of finding the teen who disappeared 16 years ago. "I can't be afraid to hope she will be found, but I guess I'm afraid of the outcome," Dorothy MacLean, Jennifer's mother, said. "It is probably going to be what I feared all along." More than two dozen searchers are set to examine two spots in Brockton, one in Avon and one in West Bridgewater Memorial Day weekend for signs of Jennifer Lynn Fay who went missing Nov. 14, 1989, after partying with friends near her family's apartment on Emerson Avenue in Brockton. The searchers — all volunteers — will come from throughout the state and region and will include dogs trained to detect bodies under water, said Phil White, a private detective working pro bono on the case. The spots are being targeted after White, three other private investigators and a researcher, volunteering through the Molly Bish Foundation re-examined state and Brockton police records and interviewed dozens of people who knew Jennifer or may know what happened to her. "It is based on prior police investigations and some other intelligence that we have uncovered," White said. When Jennifer first went missing 16 years ago at age 16, police initially considered her a runaway. But her mother said she doubted that from the start and has tried to keep the investigation alive since. "It was a different time then," MacLean said. "They didn't feel it was an abduction because it was an older child. It was just easier for them at the time to say she ran away." But times — and attitudes — have changed since 1989. Today, when a child goes missing — and is believed abducted — authorities issue what is known as an Amber Alert, broadcasting the child's description on radio and television stations and on highway signs. The alert — officially called "America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response" and signed into law in 2003 — is named for 9-year-old Amber Hagerman, who was kidnapped and murdered while riding her bike in Arlington, Texas, in 1996. Also, many communities in the country, as well as locally, have signed onto a phone alert system to help find missing persons. Under that system, when a child or adult is reported missing and is considered endangered or has a medical problem, automated telephone calls are made to homes and businesses in the area. The homes and businesses within a mile area will receive a call with a recorded message, providing a description of the missing person as well as other pertinent information. As the search continues, more calls can be made in a wider radius. MacLean has seen how the change in attitude about missing children has effected the search for her daughter. The missing person's file on Jennifer was reopened more than five years ago and a team of investigators are now actively pursuing the case. Brockton Detective Michael Damiano and state police Detective Chris Dolan have been working on the case for more than five years, traveling along the East Coast to interview potential witnesses. Areas in Holbrook and Brockton were searched about two years ago by state and local police. Jennifer's name and photograph are now on several Web sites, including www.misskids.org, www.doenetwork.us and a Web site dedicated to finding her, www.whereisjennifer.org. Her name was entered into the nationwide computer of missing persons just days after she was reported missing in 1989. And this year, the team of private investigators joined the probe to help. "There have been a lot of different leads but none panned out," said Brockton Lt. William Conlon, chief of detectives. "We keep hoping that somebody will come forward, maybe have a guilty conscious that they were protecting somebody. The family deserves to know what happened, one way or another." State police Lt. Joseph Mason, assigned to the Plymouth County district attorney's office, said investigators aren't giving up. "We follow up every lead we can," he said. Those leads are likely to point to murder, several said. "I think the family is resolved that there is more than likely foul play involved," White said. "Everyone holds a small hope in the bottom of their hearts that Jennifer is alive." Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz said unsolved cases — such as what happened to Jennifer Fay — are heart-breaking for families and discovering what happened is a top priority. "We have an obligation to come to a resolution," Cruz said. "The families have so many unanswered questions and we have an obligation to answer them as best we can." He said investigators want to know what led to the disappearance — and bring whoever is responsible to justice. MacLean said she doesn't want to think too far ahead. She just wants the question that has haunted her for 16 years to be answered: Where is her daughter? "I just want to find her and bring her home," MacLean said. "Then find who did what. But just bring her home first. That's what I want. It has been what we've wanted, from day one, to find her." enterprise.southofboston.com/articl...news/news01.txt

AALIYAH JOHNSON MISSING, KENSINGTON, PAPolice looking for girl, 12, missing from Kensington Posted on Thu, May. 26, 2005 Police and family members are asking the public's help in locating 12-year-old Aaliyah Johnson, who has been missing from her home on Albert Street near Trenton Avenue in Kensington since Sunday. Aaliyah is 5-feet-4, 197 pounds, has brown hair, brown eyes, shoulder-length hair and was last seen wearing a green shirt and blue jeans. Police said they did not believe that foul play was involved. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Aaliyah is asked to call East Detectives at 215-686-3243. www.philly.com/mld/dailynews/news/local/11740662.htm He says missing girl's mom died worrying about her By GLORIA CAMPISI campisg@phillynews.com Posted on Fri, May. 27, 2005 Overwhelmed by fears for her missing 12-year-old daughter, Sharaunmyesha Johnson, only 32, collapsed and died this week. Three days later, the child, Aaliyah Johnson, remains missing, and her father worries that she still may not know of her mother's death. Aaliyah was last seen on the front steps of her home on Albert Street near Trenton Avenue in Kensington on May 15, and although police said she had made a call to school friends on Monday, she hasn't turned up, said her father, Donald Bradshaw, 43. Bradshaw said Johnson had been terribly upset about their missing daughter. He talked with her Monday and urged her to calm down. "She was crying and saying nobody's helping." When he called her Tuesday, Johnson collapsed and died of a heart attack before she could get to the phone, he said. A spokesman for the medical examiner's office could not be reached last night to verify the cause of death. Bradshaw said he told Johnson when he talked to her Monday, "You relax. I'm going to find her." "Nobody's helping," Bradshaw said in a choked voice last night, as he prepared to post fliers about his daughter. He has searched around Port Richmond, Frankford and Fishtown, he said. "I want to find my daughter. She needs to know her mother died looking for her." Both he and the girl's mother blamed authorities for what they alleged was a poor police response to her disapperance. Bradshaw said he wanted to know why police had not issued an Amber Alert for the girl. The Amber Alert system immediately alerts police in the area, and broadcasters, who inform the public, when a child has disappeared. Bradshaw, who did not live with the mother and daughter, said he was especially worried because, he said, Aaliyah is mentally challenged and functions at a 7- or 8-year-old level. "She wouldn't know how to survive on the street," he said. Police defended their handling of the missing-persons report, saying there was no hint of foul play. "A lot of kids out there are running away from home and are reported missing to police and we've got to find them," said police spokesman Cpl. Jim Pauley. Bradshaw said he talked with police yesterday and asked, "Why haven't you put out an Amber Alert? "My daughter is just as important as the other kids that's missing." He said Aaliyah had never run away from home. Bradshaw said police had told him "to go around the neighborhood and ask" about Aaliyah. Bradshaw, who has a new baby with his girlfriend, said he does housework for a living and had taken so much time for the search, "I almost lost my job. " Police put Aaliyah's photograph and description out Tuesday, the day the girl's mother died, Bradshaw said. "They waited until her mother had to die from heartache from this, crying nobody would help us," Bradshaw said bitterly. Pauley said the case was being handled by detectives Romanita King and Linda Hughes, both "dedicated" police officers. The detective pair recently found missing Haitian immigrant Guirlene Dupuy, also 12. Aaliyah was described as 5-feet-5, 190 pounds with brown, shoulder-length hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a green shirt and blue jeans. Anyone with information on the girl's whereabouts is asked to call East Detectives at 215-686- 3243. www.philly.com/mld/dailynews/news/local/11750579.htm
