I’ve heard about lot of things that are not allowed to DR inmates. I wander what are they allowed to have and to do: May they smoke? I mean cigarettes of course :-) if yes, where do they buy them? And is quantity limited? May they watch TV? Is there any TV room, or just in the cells? May they read as much as they want and is family allowed to send them books and magazines and newspapers? May they receive parcels with food, snacks, clothes? May they use computers for researching about legal matters?

The rules differ state by state as to all of these. Most DRs have TVs (Texas no longer has TVs at all but when they did they were in the hall; every few cells and watched thru bars) CA prisoners can have TVs if they can buy them; in their cells; and also CDs and CD players; other states allow only radio; some states u can mail books and mags; in others they must be purchasd but sent by the publishers etc.
NO DEATH ROW prisoner has computer access at all; ever.

I'm confused. You said no death row prisoner has computer access at all, but my penpal Jody types this letters to me. They are all typed. He says he's ashamed of his handwriting. Gill.

some states allow typewriters....and some of the guys have those old computer style typewriters but they are not computers. That said; I do not know much about the conditions on Marylands' death row but I know that it does not exist in any other state and I would be surprised if it was different in Maryland. I think its probably just a typewriter IT WOULD BE GREAT IF ALL PENPALS CAN GET THE RULES FROM THEIR FRIEND IN DIFFERENT STATES to post here

The letters look like they've been printed by a typewriter. Very old style. But he does get to use colour. Practically every word is a different colour! Posted him his reply yesterday. Looking forward to his next letter. Gill. xx

Yes Gill, they can have typewriters sometimes. In Nevada they can have a TV in their cell... of course they must have money to buy one... What I know pretty well is about nevada Stae Prison: All what they want to buy must come from one special approved store, and if they have money they can have many items.. as hygene stuffs, food, electronics, tobacco, cigarettes, sodas, clothes, wirting materials, and many other stuffs. They can order them weekly from the prison's store. They can receive things from outside ( family of friends)only twice a year and always from an approved store. It is usually in May/June and Decemebr/ Jenuary, during this period, only 1 person and only 1 time can send stuffs to a death row inmate. You can send money, through money orders, Jpay and other methids approved by the prison's stuff. They have a limit about buying books and magazines, but I dont remember well now.. I can't send him books from here... If any other things will come on my mind I will post it Hugs
