Hi Polly,
I have a couple of advises for you. Take it for whatever its worth. I've had a few nasty experiences. However, I've had more wonderful experiences than bad - BY FAR!!
What about asking somebody you know to recommend a person for you?
Another thing you should think of is if you think you have time for and if you can handle to write somebody who does not have anyone but you. Remember, this person has huge problems, and if they don't have any other friends than you, it can be extremely demanding.
Just my 2 cents.
GOOD LUCK ANYWAY!
Love, Turid

I think its nice to write to someone who has no one. I often recieve letters from people saying that they would like at least one penpal or haven't had any response to their ad etc....I would like everyone on DR to have at least one advocate; one voice outside; and not everyone does by far.
Its good to consider that it might be more effort to be someone's only friend; but helping someone truly in need of a friend might have more rewards too.

Hiya, when i was considering writing, i too felt i wanted to reach in there and correspond with somebody who had no family or friends to care for them, somone who REALLY needed a friend. Some inmates appeared to have the gift of the gab and seemed to have lots of folks writing to them. I trawled through CCADP pen-pals web pages for about a month before i actually put pen to paper, it was'nt something i did on impulse because i felt it was a big commitment. Funnily enough, the first ad to catch my eye was the one i eventually answered, after reading hundreds of others i went with my initial instinct, and was glad i did. I now know my friend has a loving, supportive family behind him. If he has other penfriends he has'nt mentioned them and i don't ask - i don't think it's any of my business who he writes to. It makes me happy to know that i make his day when he receives a letter from me. Good luck with your search Paula. You will know when you come across the person you want to write to, somehow you will just feel drawn towards their ad., well thats how i chose my friend. Will you let me know how you get on? Love Mo
