I often get questions about what can be sent in the mail; ie. can the prisoners in certain states recieve stamps; and if not;how can one send them a few dollars to help with stamp replies.
The rules differ state by state; so please share your experience here. If you know the mail rules for a certain state; please post it here so people can use this info when writing prisoners on our page.
'll start -
PENNSYLVANIA-
Cannot send single stamps or stamp books. Any publications like books or magazines must be mailed from tbe publisher or an accredited vendor. Cannot send blank cards for the prisoners use; or any stationary. Only send letters; cards or postcards; photos. Any other attachments will mean the prisoners does not get your letter.

Oklahoma: cannot send stamps, if sending money has to be a postal money order. If you send a polaroid picture you have to take the backing off of it. No stickers on letters or envelopes. Cannot send care packages, has to come from approved vendors such as Swiss Colony...etc. Goes for magazines as well. If I can think of anything else will post later

Hi i have recently been corresponding with a death row guy in Alabama. I misunderstood what he said he could receive (5 sheets of text - i sent him some history stuff on old english outlaws).
He sent a mail back saying that the prison were sending it back to me - at his expense! So I recommend finding out exactly the rules (they also refused the letter, which took me ages to write!)

I write to Florida and spray perfume on the paper, and so far it's been OK, after 14 years being in an all male environment a small gesture like a touch of Armani means the world. No stickers, polaroids ( but who uses them nowadays ) to be honest i've not had anything returned by the mail-room yet. Even in my first letter i mentioned i saw the ad. in the CCADP and this was supposed to be against the rules. Last month i sent a souvenir of a ticket from the Grand National at Aintree and it got in OK. Maybe this is just luck, i know from experience how cruel screws (guards) can be.

I´ve got a question! I have a penpal in San Quentin, CA. I´ve found him over the webpage of Alive e.V. I wanted to send Paul some stamps, paper and a pen soon and now I am a little bit unsure about it! The rules say the following: Letters: Takes us up to two weeks to actually get a letter sent to us in our hands. Can send half a ream of paper, 1 black or blue pen per letter. Inmates can receive 100 stamps per letter.
Money: Money orders are best to send, personal checks take 30 days to clear. Money Orders and checks can be sent directly to the inmate.
Publications: Cannot send direct any publications, must come from publisher as www.amazon.com
Photos: You can send photos in a letter, but no Polaroids! Is this information correct???

Yes, that´s where I found this list, too. I intend to send a long letter, including birthday-card, paper and a pen, this week and now I am afraid that Paul won´t receive this letter. That would be something I don´t want to risk because he has his birthday in august and I want to congratulate him!
I am a Member of Alive and I will ask at once if there is a mistake! I will post it here as soon as I got a reply!
