Joanna was someone I knew personally when she lived in London before she emigrated to America and got married. Her husband was a Texan fundamentalist preacher and they ended up getting divorced. Joanna then took up with a thoroughly unsuitable man called Michael Scott Hudnall. He was a drunk, a drug addict and physically violent.
When Joanna broke up with him, he turned up at work and shot her dead.
He's been sentenced to 50 years in prison and will be eligible for parole in 25.
I don't call that justice.
Joanna's mother Mary is a good friend of MY mother and, like I said, I knew Jo when she lived in London.

Hudnall Sentencing

By Lynne Sullivant
Last November, 39-year- old Michael Hudnall went to CB&I, in Tyler, and shot his ex-girlfriend, Joanna Jones, outside her work. He then turned the gun on himself, but failed to take his own life.
Less than a month later, Hudnall was released from the hospital, booked into the Smith County jail, and charged with murder.
Earlier this month Hudnall pleaded "guilty" to murdering Joanna Jones. But he wasn't sentenced until today. The Smith County DA's office wanted to make sure Jones' father could be in the courtroom for her murder's sentencing. He flew in from England.
But Hudnall's father was also in the courtroom, and he spoke with us after the sentencing.
Friends, family and co-workers of Joanna Jones packed the courtroom. They sat alongside the family of Michael Scott Hudnall.
"We have a lot of concern for the family," said O.J. Hudnall Jr., Michael's father.
He described how his thoughts are with Jones' family, "our primary concern has always been for the welfare of joanna's family and in particular joanna's daughter."
After sentencing Hudnall to 50 years in the Texas Department of Corrections, those close to Jones were able to give a statement.
Jones' husband, Eric was first, "I just want you to know that I haven't lost my wife and our daughter hasn't lost her mother."
Eric showed compassion for Hudnall. Eric said, "I love you man and I forgive you. God bless you brother."
Smith County District Attorney, Matt Bingham, read statements from Jones' mother. Mary Dunn said, "our only child came to Texas with dreams and ambitions. And became the victim of a selfish and cruel man she trusted who took her life in a fit of rage and jealously. "
Hudnall said his son pleaded guilty out of consideration for Jones' 11-year-old daughter. Hudnall explained, "he didn't want to have her go through the reconstruction of events that led up to her mother's death."
The DA's office is also seeking restitution for Jones' family. There will be a post sentence investigation to determine how much Hudnall will have to pay. Michael Hudnall could have to pay as much as $10 thousand dollars in restitution.
As for his 50-year prison sentence, he'll be eligible for parole in 25 years.
