Would pros benefit from writing (in a civil manner and not asking to drop appeals) death row inmates? I remember reading on another board where a lady wrote a hateful letter to an inmate and he responded to her surpise and they have been writing ever since and have become good friends. It can happen

I have had the BEAUTIFUL chance to meet personally Bill Pelke; he is the grandson of Ruth Pelke, murdered by Paula Cooper in 1985; Paula was 15 at the time of crime. Bill Was a very pro death penalty person... well.. I am not going to tell you the whole story right now.... however he started to write to Paula... something slowly started to change inside of him... and well.. he WAS THE MAN WHO FIGHTED MOST to get Paula out from death row.... He told us that Paula now is completetely rehabilited, she got an university degree while in prison ( after she got off from DR of course...) and now, he is president and co-fonder of Journey of Hope an organization led by murder victim family members who oppose the death penalty... He is one of the greatest person I have ever met in my life... but... I think few people would be able to do what he has done..... very few people....

Your right Ela... very few people could do what he has done. It is good to hear a positive like this come out of a horrible situation.

Or even a pro to write just to see the human side of the inmates and what may have got them on dr in the first place, to give them a better understanding.

Yes Cookie, I understand what you mean... I mentioned him becouse he is the only pro I know who wrote to a DR inmate... and see what happened... Of course they would benefit... if only they wanted to hear.....

I honestly do not think that I could do that. I would be very judgemental and not very nice. It would not be a good idea for the inmate who has a lot of troubles to have a more coming through the mail. I have been asked to write before but I really cannot do that...

Mike, if you change your mind, I'll help you pick out an inmate to write.

I think you might be surpised Mike... we had already talked about this? remember? I have to say you have a good attitude with this though... you say " I don't feel comfortable in doing that" and that is respectful if it's your feeling.. I mean.. it is not an easy decision to take... At least you don't say as I have heard somewhere "I don't write letters becouse they not even deserve letters...."

No. Could not do that. Not that mean or cruel. No...Not me. Everyone deserves friends and family. Even the worst of us.

Thank you. But it would be a difficult thing to do... I agree with you mike. This is why I never wrote to troy, all though there was much I would have liked to ask him, I did not think I could do it with any kind of kindness and I did not want to be that way. And yes he some what scared me and Im not really sure why. Everyone knows my other reasons. For some pros it may be a good idea, but for others it may not.

If you are going to quote me please do it right. I said "Because I dont think they should be aloud to have penpals the only letters they should get is from there families and there attorneys, so to send them a letter would be to give them more then I want to give." This is my choice, but I have never disrespected anyone that does, I have said I dont understand it but thats your choice not mine. Ask noosh if you like, we have talked about this very thing many times. And her I respect above anyone on this board.

Or even a pro to write just to see the human side of the inmates and what may have got them on dr in the first place, to give them a better understanding. I know there is a human side to the inmates. The problem is: that side is overshadowed by the side that brought them to death row. I do not think that I could write to them. I would constantly keep thinking of the crime they were accused of.
