Hi, my Dad was murdered and his killer whom i knew got a life sentence (12 years) in the UK. He will be released some time next year. When it happened I wished that we had the death sentence but my views have changed a lot since then. He won't be the same person he was back then and when I read some of the Dear Row pages it is obvious that they too have changed and so I am more for rehabilitation than furhter killing. However, I still battle with feelings of I can't have my Dad back when his killer gets out and starts a new life. I suppose that it is a very difficult subject and everyone has a different view on it.

12 years! Thats way too little. I think 25 - years to life is the best. That way it could be LWOP when it was called for; for those that society needs to be protected from. Those cases where mercy seems called for; perhaps 25 years; but 12 years is awful.
We are so sorry for your loss; and admire your strength - glad to have u hear

Ok not sure what happened to my post, i had a very long post that i wrote....but yes, i have experienced someone in my life being murdered. sad part is, i know who did it and he is free....the only evidence is circumstancial..michigan isn't like texas, we don't just throw people away on circumstancial (i am sure we HAVE) but for the most part, the cops in this case could do nothing....i even had contacted the violent crimes unit and mentioned i felt i knew who had killed my friend (and several others) they confirmed that he was a key suspect, however, no real evidence, just speculation and the fact that they "didnt like his answers when questioned".
i also was assaulted once....and i still oppose the death penalty 100%

My grandfather, H. H. Duvall, was killed by three "men" in 1974. They struck him in the head several times with a hammer and he later died as a result. One of the killers was given the death penalty, but the Supreme Court overturned all death penalty convictions so it was changed to life. He escaped 3 times while on work release (I can't understand putting a murderer on work release but you'd think that after one escape they'd know better, two should really tell you something, but some folks don't learn). He ended up serving more time for escape than for murder. All three have been released.

Wow red, I am sorry for your loss. To have him escape three times!! That does not make much sense now does it? Hopefully no one else was a victim during these escapes. I surely hope they have all turned their lives around now that they are out again. My best to you....

What a terrible strory; I can't understand the thinking behind that AT ALL - what WAS the administration or parole board or whoever makes those decisions THINKING to have this person on work release. Life w/o needs to MEAN life!
I am so sorry for the loss to your family and what might have been..tracy

We are so sorry for your loss; and admire your strength - glad to have u hear You have to remember that in England all murder is considered capital murder and thus every murderer gets a life sentence. Even if a person is released on licence, they will never be completely free and they can be returned to prison for breaking any of the conditions of their licence. They do not have to break any laws to be returned to prison. Judges recommend a minimum period for the convicted to serve but that does not mean they will automatically be released on licence. My niece was kidnapped and murdered by a paedophile, though it seems like yesterday it was nineteen years ago.
Two very close male friends of mine were murdered because they were gay. We had been very close since we started school together and stayed in the same as each other through junior school and then they went to the boys half of the senior school we went to.
Then five us trained and lived together for almost two years but all four the others were murdered by the IRA, I was almost but got off light and spent two years in hospital recovering from my injuries.
I have no hate towards anybody because I know that it would only eat me up and make no difference to the way they feel about what they did.
Love and hugs, Judy

my cousin and his wife lived with us ... he was like my brother (well actually he was since he lived with us since my uncle died and his white mom didnt want him) and his wife was like a big sister for me (my cousin and her were both like 15 years older than me) ... he brought her into the family when i was only 3 years old so i was used to have her there since i was a kid and i loved her very much ... both moved away into their own apartment very close to our house cuz my mom wanted them to when they didnt get a grip on their constant drug problems .. i was 14 then ... only a few months later they were arguing and my cousin killed her ... it was unintentionally though when they were both full of drugs ... but unintentionally or not - she was dead and my cousin called us the other morning when he woke up and found her dead ... me and mom went over to their apartment and since i was faster than my mom i saw her lying on the floor dead ... she was the 1st dead person i ever saw and she was a person i loved ... it was devastating and took me a long time to be able to deal with it ... may she rest in peace .. i know shes in heaven now and knows we still love and miss her ...
