Hello all. I read that I am to introduce myself here first. I am a pro, but with a twist. I understand both sides of the fence... I just feel it in my heart that the pro side is more for me. I feel that if a person makes a conscious decision to take another persons life, then that person must pay the price and face the consequences. I am not here to upset anyone, just lurk and maybe post from time to time. Thank you all for your acceptance in advance.

I'm looking forward to learn more about your opinions. As for myself, I'm anti-death penalty. However, I agree 100% with what you say: "I feel that if a person makes a conscious decision to take another persons life, then that person must pay the price and face the consequences." I just do not think the consequences should be death. The eye for an eye philosophy cannot always be applied, because there are way too many offenses that cannot be "paid for" that way. People are being murdered, raped, burglarized - it's just no other way of punishing some offenses than imprisonment. Where I come from, (Norway) the max penalty you can get for anything is 21 years in prison, and if there is still doubt whether or not this person could be a future danger to society, he / she may be held in custody indefinitely. I don't say that is a good solution. I don't even agree with it, and I consider "predictions regarding future dangerousness" as more or less qualified guessing on the shrinks' part. We all know that the courts consist of human beings. They do make mistakes. If the sentence isn't death, it is at least possible to (to some extent) fix errors that could otherwise be fatal. But there's a long way from being opposed to death penalty to suggest violent crimials shouldn't be punished at all. In the worst cases I wouldn't mind LOWP at all. We had a case here in Norway a few years ago that was so horrendous that I wouldn't say anything if they were confined to a basement with water and bread for the rest of their natural lives. 2 small girls were murdered by 2 grown up men, and I'll stop there and spare you the details, because this case makes me sick. Anyway: WELCOME - good to see you here! Love, Turid

Dear sadtruth, hello there, pleased to meet you and to hear you understand both sides, does that not put you sitting on the fence then In a lot of cases it's not a conscious decision to take a life, it's something that tragically happens on impulse out of anger / fear, a whole mixture of emotions. By the way,' lurk' ( Oxford Concise) =" linger furtively, lie in ambush, hide esp. for sinister purposes." I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that this was just a bad choice of word, of course you're welcome so long as you are'nt here to upset anyone, have a good day, love Mo.
