(Your mentions)
Annie-I came across the CCADP website with your profile on it asking for a pen pal.
Kenny-She said she was doin' a project on the death row penatly at college an' she was doin' some reseach an' she found the website wit' my profile on it.
Jack- The one by that society? Woman came round, asked us if we wanted pen pals?
Annie-I found this website-the canadian Coalition for the Abolition of the Death Penalty. They run free web pages for prisoners on death row. I read a few profiles and decided I'd write to Kenny.
(Some touching scenes.)
(Annies hospital room. Melanie and Ophelia are no longer there, nor are the machines. Annie is in bed. Eyes closed, she is breathing loudly; a rasping, painful sound. Over the top we hear echoey, distant memories in her mind.*
Kenny-Your first letter meant so much to me. With much love, Kenny.
Annie-Hes got these beautiful blue eyes...I just wanna weep for him...
Kenny-I lie awake thinkin' 'bout it...It's okay. It's okay. You're here now. That's all that matters.
Annie-Will you think of me when you're sleeping? I'll be waiting for you when I'm sleeping.
*The lights change. Blackout. They come back up on Kenny and Annie. Music: I know you by heart, by Eva Cassidy. Kenny holds his hand out. Annie takes it. They dance together, starting to talk after the line, "Lights up your face in orange and gold."*
Annie-I told you I'd be here.
Kenny-I know. (Pause.)
Annie-Its all done then.
Kenny-Yep.
Annie-You know, I'm glad I wasn't afraid. If I'd had any expectations of what this palce would be like, I might have been disappointed. But I couldn't make another wish.
Kenny-I've spent half my life makin' wishes. But what do you do when the wish's come true?
Annee-I guess thats the point...they never come true.
Kenny-I heard this poem once. "Roses leaves, when the rose is dead, Are heaped for the beloved's bed; And so thy thoughts, when thou art gone, Love itself shall slumber on."
Annie-"Slumber on..." I like that.
Kenny-Your a blessin'. You do so much for me...an' what for.
Annie-Don't think about that now. Things are going to get worse before they get better-"It's always darkes before dawn." I promised I'd wait for you while I'm sleeping...so I am.
Kenny-I dreamed of you in the dark.
Annie-Its going to get dark again very soon. Will you be ok on your own? Only for a litttle while.
Kenny-'Course. You'll be waitin', won't you?
Annie-Of course. I promised I would be.
Kenny-Well then.
Aniee-Just a little while.
*Black out.*
Kenny-An' then everthin''s over.
*Last scene. Basically this guy Lester beats up Kenny, and the other inmates and so on. He beats up Kenny one last time as he is to excuited the next day. Warder is the 'decent' guard. He says he shouldn't, then says after Kenny dies he is quitting. Kenny writes one last letter to Annie, although she will never get it because she is dead.*
Kenny-Jus' had the sh*t kicked outta me, an' all I can think 'bout is you. I keep thinkin' bout what you said-how everythin' would be okay. When you came to visit we both knew my date was set, an' I'm glad we agreed not to talk 'bout it. I guess it made it eaiser for both of us.
*Bit of chat between Warder and Lester.)
Kenny-I know this letter's never gonna reach you, 'cause you're in a place where only thoughts can reach you now. I'm glad you're outta all this-glad you went before me. I ain't glad you're dead, 'cause I could never be glad o' that. When the letter arrived, an' I saw the return address was yours but a differnt name, differnt handwritin'...I knew. Somethin' in me snapped. Just'...went. *Winces, holding his side.* But you hold on for me. Don't think I'm lettin' you go. you promised-I'm holdin' you to that. You're the one person who never let me down. Remember that poem? "Roses leaves, when the rose is dead, Are heaped for the beloved's bed; And so thy thoughts, when thou art gone, Love itself shall slumber on." Thats what you were, sweetheart. My l'll rose. Tommorra I'll be there wit' you. I'm scared-but I can't wait. There's nothing' left to live for now. *Softly.* It's like you dont' wanna live in a place anymore-so you move on somewhere new. That's what's happenin'. I don't wanna live here no more-so I'm movin' on.
*Bit more chat between Lester and Warder, Warder quits.*
Kenny-Six p.m. tomorra, Annie. Not long. Not long now at all. Hold on sweetheart. I'm comin;. I'm on my way. All my love, Kenny.
Amazing play...truly amazing.
