The schoolchildren felt that when India can celebrate Id, then Pakistan can celebrate Janamashtami and release Sarabjit as a token of love for Indians on the festival. The students said there was a strong public sentiment in India to maintain everlasting cordial relations with Pakistan and the gesture would be strong building block in this direction.
The activists of Vishwa Guru Ravi Dass Mission too held a peaceful march seeking the release of Sarabjit Singh. Chairman of the mission Jaswant Singh Kataria and president Shiv Ram Saroay said that the member of South Asian Human Rights Group of Canada and president of the Canadian unit of Vishwa Guru Ravi Dass Mission Sheetal Ram Kler had raised the issue with the Indian and Punjab governments.
He said that Kler accompanied 17 Punjabi youths to Pakistan and met around 275 Indian prisoners languishing in Pakistan jails. Claiming that Kler also met Sarabjit Singh during the visit, Saroay said that Sarabjit’s was a case of mistaken identity.
The Mission has decided to appeal President Dr A P J Kalam and Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to persuade Pakistan President to release ‘innocent’ Sarabjit, said Saroay.
