Mother pleads for fugitive to surrender----Statesville man must 'give
himself up and face this,' she says
In Newton, the mother of a fugitive charged in the kidnapping and killing
of his former girlfriend made an impassioned plea Wednesday for her son to
turn himself in.
"I love him, and I'll be there for him through this whole thing. I don't
want him or anyone else to get hurt," said the Statesville woman, who
requested she not be named or photographed because, she said, she's been
getting hostile phone calls.
"He's got to give himself up and face this," said the woman, sobbing as
she spoke to reporters at the Catawba County Sheriff's Office. "It's not
going to go away."
Authorities have been searching for 36-year-old Robert Lane Windsor of
Statesville for a week. Witnesses told them Aug. 18 that they saw Windsor
place what they thought was a body into the trunk of 30-year-old Stephany
Jo White's Ford Taurus outside her Conover home and drive away,
authorities have said.
White's body was found late Saturday in the trunk of an abandoned Taurus
on Interstate 77 near the Brookshire Freeway interchange in Charlotte. She
had been suffocated.
Windsor remained at large Wednesday, although several people contacted
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police to say they had seen him around Charlotte.
But none of the tips panned out, said Officer Mandy Giannini, a police
spokeswoman.
The department broadcast a description of him every hour and briefed each
shift of officers throughout the day, Giannini said. Authorities still
considered Windsor armed and dangerous, and they urged anyone who sees him
to call 911.
Windsor has a record of arrests in Mecklenburg, Iredell and Catawba
counties, including on assault and drug charges. White had ended a
relationship with Windsor in the last few weeks and told him to stay away
from her home, authorities have said.
The 2 had been dating off and on for about 4 years, Windsor's mother said.
She said she believes her son genuinely loved White, but a longstanding
addiction to crack cocaine turned him into something he wasn't."I think if
he did it, it was an accident. He loved her," the woman said. "I just
don't believe he would hurt her, not on purpose."
The woman said she cared for White, too, and encouraged the 2 to stay away
from each other. "He had too many problems, and she didn't need those
problems," she said. "But they just couldn't seem to stay apart."
She said she knows White's parents, who live in West Virginia, but hasn't
talked to them since their daughter's disappearance. She said she can
hardly express how sorry she is, but her main concern for now is her son.
"No matter what, he's still my son," she said. "I just hate that forever
he'll be known as this monster who killed his girlfriend."
