S'porean held in Bangkok with Ecstasy pills August 21, 2005 Print Ready Email Article
THE Singaporean was apparently on his way from Frankfurt to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, carrying over 20,000 Ecstasy pills.
But Thai police arrested him at the transit lounge of Bangkok international airport yesterday.
The pills were worth more than US$ 300,000 ($500,723), Thai officials said.
Tan Seng Peow, 47, was carrying four plastic bags of the pills when he was caught soon after getting off a Thai Airways plane from Frankfurt about 7:30 am (6.30am, Singapore time).
The police said that Tan maintained his innocence and told them he had been asked to carry the bags, AFP reported.
He was charged with smuggling and trafficking drugs - an offence that carries the death penalty in both Thailand and here.
Mr Chatchai Suthiklom, deputy secretary-general of Thailand's Office of Narcotics Control Board, said Ecstasy pills are popular among wealthy Thais at nightclubs.
