KARACHI: A suspected militant charged by Pakistani police for his alleged role in the 2002 kidnapping and murder of US journalist Daniel Pearl was remanded in custody by a court yesterday, investigators said.
Hashim Qadeer, who was detained last month in eastern Pakistan, appeared at an anti-terrorism court in the southern city of Karachi and was ordered by a judge to return on August 27.
“The judge has sent him to jail and has ordered police to submit the charge sheet at the next hearing,” police investigator Ghulam Hameed Samoo said outside the court, which was closed to reporters.
Police said late Tuesday they had arrested and charged Qadeer over the kidnapping of Wall Street Journal reporter Pearl.
The suspect is said to have introduced Pearl to British-born Islamic extremist Sheikh Omar in Rawalpindi, a garrison city near the capital Islamabad.
Sheikh Omar was convicted of involvement in Pearl’s abduction and given the death penalty by an anti-terrorism court in June 2002. His appeal has been pending for over two years and was again adjourned on Tuesday.
Meanwhile Qadeer had been found not guilty of another unrelated murder, a case for which he was originally charged and produced before a court in Karachi last week, investigator Samoo added.
“My client is innocent and has not committed any offence nor has any role in the kidnapping of Pearl,” Qadeer’s lawyer Rai Bashir said.
Pearl disappeared in Karachi on January 23, 2002. A graphic video showing his decapitation was delivered to the US consulate in the city nearly a month later.
Another three people have also been sentenced to death in connection with the case. – AFP
