For the first time since Scott Peterson was sentenced to die, the convicted killer of his wife and unborn son is now speaking publicly via the Internet, issuing a message of thanks to his supporters.
"The amount of support we have received is just incredible," writes Peterson, surrounded by images of barbed wire. "Those who have decided to reach out to our family have made such a difference. The thoughtfulness and benevolence shown is a source of strength and spirit, an affirmation of considerate community. In every conversation among our family there is always the mention of your thoughts and letters."
While Peterson himself does not have Internet access on death row, his message was posted by the Canadian Coalition Against the Death Penalty. The website also includes an address where the public can contact Peterson at San Quentin State Prison in California.
Laci Peterson
"I wish I could respond to express my gratitude," continues Peterson. "However, people having sold my notes, and sometimes fabricating content, preclude me from doing so. It is an irritating, unfortunate situation. I am tremendously appreciative of your kindness, it has such a wonderful positive effect upon our family."
The Modesto, Calif., man was convicted Nov. 12 of one count of first-degree murder for the death of Laci Peterson and second-degree murder for the death of a boy the couple planned to name Conner. The remains of the two victims were found in San Francisco Bay near the place where Scott claims to have been fishing Dec. 24, 2002.
Peterson's defense team has filed motions for a new trial.
