Dee, I am almost completely sure the first injection they receive is a light sedative to relax them. Also this may sound stupid but they have to have a regular pulse and heart-beat when the doc checks them before they are put to death.
I may be wrong here?

Dee, I believe that when they're removed from their cells and taken to Death Watch, prior to execution they're already offered Valium. Some take it, some don't - it's not only for their benefit but the benefit of the execution personnel involved. Some of them refuse to take it on principle. The first drug that comes down the drugs execution line is Sodium Pentothal, the same drug that they use to knock you out pre-op. It doesn't always work as well as it should (like the cases of people being awake but unable to let you know during their operations that you get to hear about) but it does make it so that even if he's still 'with us' when the second drug enters his bloodstream (or in the case of Angel Diaz, body tissues) , the inmate won't be able to let anyone present know.

Some states doesn't allow the oral sedative. It's horrible (anyway, DP is horrible). And yes the first injection is a sedative, but it could wear off rapidly, from what I've heard.

I've thought and thought about signing this petition and finally decided I will not. Sedation, for the most part, is offered. No sedation, short of one that is coma inducing, could begin to alleviate the absolute horror, fear, and terror of what is to come. Sedation simply, in my opinion, would give the state another tool to promote the humanity of the process. I refuse to afford a murderous state that smug comfort.

One more observation. The execution of Earl Berry was stayed in Mississippi nine minutes prior to initiating it. What pharmaceutical can diminish anguish in this situation?
