I am 65 years old and I’ve always been so proud to be called a Texan..
But recently I’ve become more and more aware of the judicial system and how wrong it has become..
I know many people believe that the death penalty is the only way to deter crime.. Really ?
Then why is our homicide rate going up every year…
Do you think when a murder happens that the person is thinking " Oh Golly they have the death penalty in Texas"..
Not only is Texas not deterring crime by executing human beings. They are executing innocent people. This is a fact.. Not a statement..
Also all this controversy over the lethal injection challenge.. Funny there should even be one.
As the veterinarians have outlawed the chemicals we use to kill humans .. They will not use it on dogs.. Doesn’t that tell us something ?
I know many people believe that all the death row inmates say they are innocent.. But believe me .. They are not all guilty…
I know of one man on the row that was convicted in Harris County.. (another long story there, right ?) I mean forensics and DNA people getting on the stand and out and out lying about the results in order to get someone convicted…
Eric Dwayne Cathey is sitting on death row.. All his appeals have been squandered.. And again, the appeals courts.. Another story.. Do they even look at the cases.. Or make decisions while having lunch..
On Sept. 12, 1995, a young girl. A known drug dealer living with a boyfriend.. Was found murdered.. It has been known that she and he owed another drug dealer.. I won’t give his name as not sure it would be proper..
The girl was found murdered.. Not far from the place of her body there was a burned out, stolen car, inside police found articles that belonged to this drug dealer that I can’t use his name.
Then the Chicano Task Force receives a letter in Spanish from the live in boyfriend of the victim Telling the police that he knew who had murdered her and gave them his name. Same as above drug dealer.. Said he was scared for his life and he wrote the letter and went back to Mexico..
Then another man incarcerated wanted to make a deal to get a lighter sentence.. He calls detectives. And tells them he knows who killed the girl. Gives them the same drug dealers name..
Then they arrest Eric Cathey.. Seems all this other information didn’t’ mean anything. They convict him mainly on the word of a man already in trouble.. Later the man wanted to change his testimony but was told that he would get ten more years if he did so..
A girlfriend of Eric’s was with him that night. She wanted to testify for Eric and tell them she was with him that night. But the police scare her off by telling her if she did they would see to it that she lost custody of her children..
There was a gun. They say was found in Eric’s possession. But that was not true either. It was found on someone else. They say this gun was the murder weapon. The forensics specialist testifies that it was the murder weapon. Eric’s attorneys wanted it retested. But that wasn’t going to happen. We all feel that it was not even the murder weapon. And coming out of Harris County labs.. Why would we even believe them now that we know what’s been going on in the labs..
Bottom line is Eric has run out of appeals. He will get a date very soon. He will die for a crime he had nothing to do with. While the actual killer will walk the streets.. And most likely do it again or probably already has… how is this called justice ?
Of course if there was money. Lots of money.. Then Eric would not be where he is .. Awaiting to die by the hands of Texas.. A good investigation has never been done. Therefore, we have to sit by while Texas kills this man.. I cannot honestly say that Texas has a justice system.. They are too eager to kill. Then when they do they hide anything they can from the public.. And this is our so called justice system..
If we , the public society of Texas do not step in and start asking questions as to what the system is doing. It will continue. Meanwhile the state will kill Eric.. And I’m not sure , in all actuality , that they don’t’ know what they are doing.
