Do you believe that prisoners should be treated humanely, whether in Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo or on Texas death row?
Do you think that the 400 men on Texas death row were sentenced to death and not to torture?
NOW IS YOUR CHANCE TO STAND UP FOR JUSTICE! WILL YOU TAKE IT?
PLEASE, PLEASE, JOIN US THIS SATURDAY, APRIL 8, IN LIVINGSTON, TEXAS!
1st Ever Rally in Downtown Livingston
For Humane Conditions on Death Row
▪ 2:00 rally at the Polk County Courthouse, 101 W. Church St. (Highway 190, a dozen blocks east off Highway 59)
§ 3:00 caravan to the Polunsky Unit for a spirited demonstration directly across the highway from death row--with chanting, speakers and live music from Houston’s “Tropic Blue”
§ Bring banners, signs, drums, bullhorns, balloons and whistles
There are 400 men sentenced to death in Texas. They live at the Polunsky Unit outside of Livingston. The conditions are horrific. There is total isolation and sensory deprivation, which is causing serious mental illnesses and depression. Men are attempting suicide, giving up appeals, and losing the will to live and fight their cases. Some wail and cry at night, some do not bathe, some babble incoherently, and some refuse to leave their cell, even to see their own attorney. Conditions are cruel but NOT unusual for Texas. This must change!
Car caravans:
Houston--meet at 12 noon at S.H.A.P.E. Community Center, 3815 Live Oak
Austin--meet at 10:00 AM at the LBJ Library, corner of Dean Keeton and Red River on the UT campus
We are demanding:
· Group recreation
· Religious services
· A work program
· Arts and crafts program
· Decent and prompt medical care
· Access to television
· Nutritious food in adequate proportions
• An end to guard brutality, sensory deprivation, 23-hour lock down and total isolation!
Sponso red by the Texas Death Penalty Abolition Movement, the Texas Moratorium Network, Texas Students Against the Death Penalty, the Campaign to End the Death Penalty and the Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty.
