I recently joined your website and am anxious to get started on meeting some new pen pals. I went through some of the inmates requesting pen pals and have selected one. I wrote a letter but haven't sent it yet, because I wanted someone's opinion on some of its content. I wrote that I had no idea what circumstances brought this person to their current situation, and had no interest in finding out unless he wanted me to know. My reasoning is I just want to help make someone feel better, and I really don't know what is going on with why they are in prison. Is this OK, or should I just not bring it up?

I think what you wrote sounds perfectly fine! It's up to you on whether or not you decide to send it. But what you wrote sounds good.

My penfriend says that just receiving a letter from someone out there, really cheers up his day. A lot of these inmates, spend entire days, weeks, months in near isolation, with absolutely no contact with the outside world. It's a completely unnatural existence for a human being or indeed, any living creature. I think it is grand of you to want to take such a generous step in cheering someone up with a communication and I say go for it, without doubt. There is little one can say that is 'wrong' as such, according to my penpal anyway. ;D

Making someone feel better, who lives an isolated, sensory deprived, and solitary existence is a wonderful thing to do. You would be amazed at how a simple letter, in which there really is no 'right' or 'wrong', can be that ray of sunshine in an otherwise grey day.

Pumpkin, I'm confused - I just responded to another person on another thread, who expressed fury at the thought that I could feel anything for a killer's eventual mode of execution, on the basis of their own victim experience. Now on this thread, another one expresses anger at the prospect of an inmate's existence being eased by correspondence and these people JOIN this group!! Why on Earth would they want to join rather than drop in as guests, given their views?!! I'm thinking sado-masochism??!!! It would be like you or I who love our kids and have certain views about paeds, joining an 'appreciate child offenders' rights to creature comforts' club and then complaining about the general subject matter!!

By the way, is it true that CCADP no longer does the penpal pages any longer for inmates? My penpal seems to think so.

CCADP posted on here a couple months ago and said she is currently working on updating penpal pages.
About the trouble makers coming on here this weekend, I was thinking the exact same thing tonight when I saw that. Geese, I guess they travel in two's! Your right, they should not register and sign up as members, because they are not members.

I'd like to first off thank legallybrunette and pumpkinpie for their input and advice. Second of all, I couldn't agree with you more about the people who want to bring even more negativity to a tragic situation. In my opinion everyone is a victim in these situations. Thirdly, it is not my place to judge these people, they have plently of help with that all ready. I give no justification for their actions, but I still love them as human beings.
