Does anybody know if outgoing mail is read?
I know incoming is read and searched for contra-band.... but I'm not clear on outgoing???
Do prisoners have any privacy rights at all when it comes to communication?
TIA

Hi. I know in Texas it is. I believe what happens is that Bobby has to leave the letter open and they will go throw it and seal it, but yes they are.

Outgoing and ingoing mail can be read. Now, whether they read all, that is another story. I do know that some are targeted to have their mail read like possible "gang" members and stuff. The high profile cases are read because they are trying to get something in writing against the inmate.
You do have to be careful what you write.

In Alabama that doesn't happen because the inmates seal it themselves. Plus the prison puts a stamp on the envelope stating that they are not responsible for what's inside because it is not read.

What I'm wondering is if you are trying to help an inmate with their case..... how much can they really tell you in a letter??? In other words... can prison officials keep the letter if the inmate has written case related material?

Alot of inmates don't like to write info like that because there is a chance that the letter could be read. Guards do sometimes keep letters. I don't know if they are supposed to do that but sometimes they do.

I would act if all communications with that person are monitored. Letters, phone, everything...Even the visiting room.

I had contact with a inmate in the UK prison system for a few years. There the outgoing and incoming mail is not read. The telephone calls are monitored all the same. You have a recorded message at the start of each phone call stating where the call is from and that it is being monitored. I know this annoyed so many of the inmates when the prison system started doing this as they felt that if they were phoning a loved one/child etc it would put some people off talking to the inmate if they knew someone was listening at the other end. I think its over the top but who am i to make the rules

In Australia it depends on the inmate. If you have been convicted of terrorism related offences, escape from prison, or organised crime you have alot bigger chance of this happening.

Maggie, in Texas all incoming and outgoing mail is read. Inmates have to be careful what they say. Saying the wrong thing can land them in some serious trouble or danger. C/O's are not supposed to read their mail but they do and sometimes they do keep some mail. Take it from me I've been there and seen it and had it happen it me. Inmates have NO privacy at all when it comes to communications or anything else for that matter.

This goes for jails all over the world. If you think for a minute your words are not being noted, then you are kidding yourself on. I, too have been there and binned the T-shirt

Please do not be so naive as to think that every word being said, in and out of these places, is not recorded.

TIA I would put money on nothing is sacred in these places, in that ALL incoming and outgoing mail can and is read when /if the screws feel like it.
