I simply have not understood what really does change when you can legally execute someone. I am from Australia and we do not have the death penalty. We know that a criminal goes to jail and if he is unfit to join society then he should stay there. It seems to me that pro DP hinges on one fact...that if you end someones life then you have lost the right to live. That actually opens up the door to alot of scenarios where the end result to this argument can only be heightened hysteria. I will not understand the real meaning of the death penalty because at the end of the day I have alot of trouble justifying it.

In the USA the death penalty gives the illusion of justice and satisfies the lust for revenge. However most penalties are socially based, and while far too many of the poor serve long sentences for minor offenses, other people are released far too early considering the risk to society. That's the reality.
