Dear Friends, Earlier this month Murder Victims' Families for Human Rights reported on our blog For Victims, Against the Death Penalty that we were joining forces with the National Alliance on Mental Illness on a project focusing on mental illness and the death penalty. (see: mvfhr.blogspot.com/2008/05/at-most-painful-intersection.html ) With this email we want to share with our allies in the abolition and human rights communities a bit about our plans for the project. We hope that you will find ways to help us lift up the voices of people who have been directly affected by homicides committed by people with mental illness and who oppose the execution of mentally ill prisoners. We view this project as part of a larger campaign on mental illness and the death penalty, one that we believe will help to broaden the global movement against capital punishment. Below (and attached to this email) are a description of the MVFHR-NAMI Project and a set of FAQ that we hope will give you a better understanding of what we are attempting to do, and how you can help. If you have any questions please contact me or Susannah Sheffer ( sheffer@aceweb.com). Thank you. Thanks for that, Haddock. I'll go and check out her blog because I feel very strongly about the total indifference most people show towards mentally ill people.
In the first place most of them don't commit crimes anyway and they all get tarred with the same brush of psycho.
Secondly, if the problems are identified and treated then society would be safer.
Thanks for posting this worthwhile information.
