Neighbour charged in death of Alicia Ross
Updated Thu. Sep. 22 2005 12:26 PM ET CTV.ca News Staff
The next-door neighbour of an Ontario woman who was missing for more than a month faces a second-degree murder charge, one day after he surrendered to police.
Just hours after 31-year-old Daniel Sylvester of Markham turned himself in, York Regional Police said they found the remains of a woman they believe is 25-year-old Alicia Ross.
Police Insp. Tom Carrique told reporters Wednesday that the remains were recovered northeast of Markham, a Toronto suburb, although he offered no details, saying the matter is now before the courts.
But Ontario's chief coroner Barry McLellan confirmed the remains were found near Manilla, a town about 50 kilometres northeast of Markham, and near the town of Coboconk, another 40 kilometres north.
Further tests will be required to positively identify the remains.
Sylvester made a brief court appearance in nearby Newmarket, where he was remanded into custody and ordered to appear again Thursday for a bail hearing.
However, Sylvester's lawyer told reporters that police had no evidence to support a conviction at the time of his surrender.
"His conscience got the better of him,'' David Hobson said. "And he's prepared to let the law take its course."
Everything her boyfriend (Sean Hine) did was subjected to intense scrutiny. He did the opposite to Scott and was still the #1 suspect despite denials by the police. So much for 'feeling' he was guilty.

WA bunker-dweller accused of rape makes first court appearanceFeb 8, 10:26 PM ESTOLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) -- A man accused of raping an 11-year-old girl at knifepoint made his first court appearance in restraints Thursday, one day after officials said he was behaving too wildly to be transported to a courtroom.
David Lukas Lynch, 23, who police say had been living in an underground bunker in a park, was arrested Tuesday a few blocks from the home where the girl was raped on Monday.
Lynch had been scheduled to make his initial appearance in Thurston County Superior Court on Wednesday, but Deputy Prosecutor John Skinder said he was so "out of control" that he could not be transported from the jail. In court on Thursday, he mumbled incoherently to himself and was uncommunicative. He is being sent to Western State Hospital for a competency evaluation.
A probable cause document filed in court said Lynch wrote in journals of wanting to quit his "child hunting" habit. © 2007 The Associated Press. OLYMPIA, WA - Police thought they had their man, until DNA tests proved them wrong. On Tuesday, February 21, 2007, a twenty-three year old rape suspect was cleared following a DNA analysis. It has been reported evidence taken from the 11-year-old victim did not match that of the suspect. The findings forced the prosecuting attorney to drop all charges.
Thurston County Deputy Prosecutor, John Skinder, gave the following statement on Tuesday, "What we have found out today is that there was male DNA found on the victim's body in numerous locations, and that DNA belonged to a specific person. And that person was not David Lukas Lynch."Another 'for sure guilty suspect' turns out to be not guilty after all!
