Hi:
I am a TV producer with 60 MINUTES WEDNESDAY and work with CBS News correspondent Dan Rather.
We wish to research a possible story about women who marry men with life sentences or death sentences while they are in prison. For this purpose, I wish to contact these women to learn how they and their husbands found each, why they married given all the obvious problems and the issues that arise in considering being married and then being husband and wife. All communication will be confidential until such time as we may ask some of these women if they would agree to be interviewed by Mr. Rather.
Mr. Rather and I have done several prison related stories in recent years, including the highly praised television report about California's Three Strikes Law, a disturbing look at how several teenagers were sentenced to life for a murder they did not commit and an investigative look how a lying witness was responsible for sending three innocent men to prison.
So I ask such women to please contact me via email or by telephone, collect, at 212 975 7196. Also, suggestions about whom else to call are welcome. While I understand that there are innocent men in prison, I do ask that women who did not marry men in prison not contact us in order to urge us to do a story about such cases. Our concentration is only on women who married while their husbands who were incarcerated and who have apparently little chance of ever being released.
Many thanks.

Been thinking about this and have a few questions. Do you think they would try to make fools of these women? Do they really want to know the truth?
I think if they want to know the truth and are willing to put it out right, it might be a good deal. I just have a hard time trusting the media, if ya know what I mean.
What are some other's opinions on this?

I don't trust the media, so I understand where you are coming from Joy.
At the same time, how will public perception ever change if people don't speak out?
I say proceed with caution. You could always back out if it turned ugly-- but if it gives you the chance to tell a story that needs to be told then it will be worth it.

I think 60 Minutes would be fair; at least as fair as the media will be. I would worry about FOX and stuff like that but I would trust 60 Minutes to at least let the persons side get out...

I contacted the guy and we talked for a while. He seemed very respectful and nice and said what all I said would be confidential.
He said at the moment he is just gaining research, nothing set in stone... just wanting to talk.
I hope others would consider calling him.

Joy I think this maybe a great chance for you and other women, to get the stories told, and to inform the public of the victims of the executed prsoners.... I have never heard anyone call the wives brothers, sisters, children of dr prisoners called victims, and I believe they are victims, just as much as the victims family....
Pam to my thinking is twice a victim, twice as a mvs, but of course the newspaper, or tv would never say this....Just my thoughts, would like to hear other opinions on this... Tasha

Just so you know :
I was speaking with this gentleman regarding the fact that many of the women who end up in relationships with DR prisoners are far from the image one would get of them in some media...and that far from all being 'death row groupies' there are many sane, intelligent women involved (i think its much better when u guys speak for yourselves than when they ask groups like ours to explain your motivations!!!)
and he responded :
Many thanks. I share your reaction to these women even from the little I know and few conversations that I have had. It's extraordinary...but then again so are so many love stories. Just letting you know this; for those who are concerned with speaking to some media. I think this producer will portray stories fairly and with some compassion.
