I am corresponding with Charles Flores in Texas (Polunsky unit) and with Herbert Blakeney (SCI Greene-PA). Herbert says he is a "pro-se" defendant and has not benefited from a competent Attorney. I know there are some Attorneys who offer defense free of any charge. I know there are not many of them and I imagine their letter boxes must be packed with requests. but if anybody has some hint about how to contact them, please give me a sign. Doesn't PA provide a defense lawyer for those on death row that can't afford one?
I'll be looking around and see what I can find.

Its difficult to find pro bono attorneys.
I know Arnold and Porter out of Washington does one or two pro bono cases a year; I suppose a few of the big law firms do. There are not as many as you think though; cause a lot of private attorneys get burned out; spending tons and tons of hours and money over a period of years on a death case; and after doing one or two of those; and getting emotionally invested in the cases; they often don't want to take on any more.
If there are strong innocence issues there is the Innocence Project; Centurion Ministries, there is Northwestern Universitys Professor Protess and his classes and the org. he is forming; the Assoc. In Defense of the wrngly convicted - but as you said there are few people to help compared to the number of prisoners seekng assistance.
If you go to the "Activist classifieds" from the main board page, member Joy who is close to being a paralegal is offering legal investigatory help for free maybe that can help.
