Please wear a black armband tomorrow, 5/6/05, in silent protest of the execution of Earl Richmond, Jr. by the state of North Carolina. Mr. Richmond is scheduled to die for the 1991 murders of Helisa S. Hayes, her son Phillip and her daughter Darien.
Mr. Richmond is a former drill sergeant who confessed to the crimes in this case. He had consumed 20 beers, a 5th of liquor and a substantial amount of crack cocaine on the night prior to the incident. The murders followed consensual sex with the victim which later became an argument and finally the violence for which Mr. Richmond is being executed. He was subjected to intense physical and sexual abuse as a child. These crimes were certainly not pre-meditated and Mr. Richmond was so impaired by his substance abuse and his experiences that he was unable to form the intent to murder, both requirements for a death sentence. It is clear that Mr. Richmond needs treatment, not execution. On both legal and moral grounds, North Carolina may not let the execution of Earl Richmond go forward!
