Just wondering if anybody has any penpal stories they want to share. My penpal and I just joined the TIPS organization out in CA. They are advocates for prison reform, and a great resource. I also recently sent him some books on the Rise and Fall of Rome.... ;D We discuss all kinds of things. Anyone else?

My penpal is crazy about The Hobbit !!! He says that he dreams of living like a hobbit in total seclusion and doing his own thing. Hence his desire to move to the wilds of Dartmoor in England. He is also into all things medieval. it is pretty painful reading his efforts at ye oldie worldie prose in a regular letter!! He often addresses me as 'yon maiden fair' or remarks 'be thee warned lass' ... He even asked if we still used cart and horse to go to market on a Sunday in the streets of London!! I was tempted to respond 'oh yeah, regularly, when I'm not milkin cows in shed or holdin up stagecoach in forest, lad'.... Have you noticed how many inmates on DR seem to have amazing artistic skills? I wonder whether it is merely a significant coincidence that they all share this gift or whether there is a budding artist in us all!!! (I can only draw stick men..)

LB- I think with so much time on their hands, they develope certain skills. I've noticed that about the art too. The Hobbit is interesting.... yon maiden fair... that is kind of cute I imagine it's a mental escape. I send a lot of reading material. Actually, my pen pal is really smart. For someone who only had an 8th grade education, he has taught himself many things in prison. We discuss politics, world events, mortality. He tells me about his daily life. I just got a letter, and he was thanking me for some stamps, and how he had won some in betting also. The inmates bet stamps and snacks on sports and tv shows. He told me about one guy who has a spider in his cell as a pet. They put up with some really horrific conditions that I can't imagine-- but some still thrive in spite of it.

I like the thought that our correspondence really keeps these people 'alive' where they have been left effectively to rot. It is tragic. The fact that they can create an existence despite those dire conditions, really deserves a level of admiration from those of us on the outside who find it hard even coping with regular day to day life!! I used to worry about future sickness and how I would cope but my penpal has made me reassess my attitude; these people have death looming over their heads for YEARS with complete uncertainty as to the end and when it will come. Not sure about the SPIDER as a pet though... Yikes!!

A gal at another forum was asking for a penpal for a 67 yr old man all alone with nobody to write to. I felt so bad that I told her that I would write to him. I just received his 1st letter to me today and he thanked me 4 times for writing. He had hand drawn a Tweety Bird on the envelope and colored it in. A beautiful job too and a Thank You above that. He put alot of work into it and I will always keep it. I am so glad that I could make the guy so happy just by writing to him.
