On who to write to? Do you just randomly pick someone and write to them? How often do people write to someone and they do not write back?

Well I just picked because he sounded nice. Simple really. Some people go by the photo, others by what is said - whether or not they are funny/have anything in common and some chose those with little adds/no pictures because they don't stand out that much.
I currently write to one person regularly (every 2/3 weeks depending on mail. I've just started writing to someone else though. So I'm not sure how much of a regular thing that will be as he does get a lot of mail as he's a very high profile prisoner. I've only really wrote to others for research purposes for college work, but I've never not had a reply. I've been lucky enough to get replies from people I never would have expected to reply either (Dennis Nilsen/Ian Brady) So either way research or pen-pal I've found most will write back because they want someone to talk too.

How do you start a letter? I know that you should never ask them about their past, but what the heck do you say to them? I am seriously considering giving it a try, but I don't want to come off as an idiot or boring or anything. Is there anyone out there who doesn't have a penpal or very many people who write to them?

I wrote to my penpal because i was asked to by someone as they never had alot of people writing to him at the time. And i for one am very glad that i did. It always brings a smile to my face when i get his letters twice a week. Even more so over christmas when he drew me his own christmas cards.
Its a good thing to do i think anyway.

When I first wrote to my pen pal I told him who I was, where I got his name from, what state I live in, and that I hoped he was getting along ok. He had stated in his ad that he liked animals so that gave us a great start.
You don't have to make that first letter a book, mine was only a page long. Now we write 8 or 10 pages every time. Just be you and it will be fine!

Erick that was quite pissie of you!!! Not at all. I was just saying that DR inmates are probably glad to get any letters at all. I am sure that they won't criticize her writing or think that it is dull and boring.

I picked my pals because I liked what I read in their ads and then when I wrote my first letter, I explained that I had found their ad, who I was, where I was from and all the things that I liked and they responded to that.

Just tell them how old you are, what you do (job/college), where you live. Like a little overview. I felt like a bit of a tool when I first wrote, but it worked so go for it...

The first time I ever wrote, I was was faced with exactly the same thing you are. It seemed so simple. I mentioned at the beginning of my letter I wasn't quite certain exactly what to say! Then, I just proceeded to talk about where I love, my family, and asked his interests ... sports, music, books ... just the usual friendly, 'getting to know someone' things.
