Thursday, January 15, 2009 Amnesty International Critical of Texas ExecutionsAI issued a news release earlier this week, Amnesty International Calls Spate of Texas Executions Shameful and Reckless. As Texas prepares to execute 14 men in fewer than three months, Amnesty International USA (AIUSA) called on the state to halt this spate of executions, describing it as being out of step with current capital punishment trends. And: “At a time when the country -- including Texas -- is opening its eyes to the problems that plague capital punishment, Governor Perry has chosen to remain blind to its flaws, further tarnishing Texas’ human rights reputation,” said Larry Cox, executive director of AIUSA. “As evidence of capital punishment's flaws mounts, and as its popularity declines, it is time for Governor Perry and other Texas leaders to seriously consider bringing the death penalty in Texas to an end." Texas courts handed down only 11 death sentences in 2008, the lowest number since 1977 (there were also 11 in 2006). Almost a decade ago, in 1999, that figure reached a staggering 48. Of the 11 handed down last year, not one was in Harris County, a county that by itself is responsible for more than 100 executions. Since 1977, nine death row inmates have been exonerated in Texas, the third highest number in the nation. It is believed that at least five men who were executed in Texas may actually have been innocent. And Dallas County leads the nation in DNA exonerations, with 19, a distinction that reveals a deeply flawed criminal justice system. Texas justice is riddled with errors, including shoddy representation for the poor and people of color. Of the 14 to be executed in the coming months only one, Larry Ray Swearingen, is white. “Most Texans know the car is out of control, but Rick Perry won’t put on the brakes,” said Sue Gunawardena-Vaughn, director of AIUSA’s Death Penalty Abolition Campaign. “At a time when responsible caution is the rule elsewhere, Texas continues its shameful and reckless lurch in the wrong direction. Texas leaders need to get serious and get out of the business of killing.” Amnesty International is a Nobel Peace Prize-winning grassroots organization with more than 2.2 million supporters, activists and volunteers in more than 150 countries who campaign for human rights worldwide.

Can there be an arrest warrant issued for Rick Perry if he ever travels outside of the US?

Can there be an arrest warrant issued for Rick Perry if he ever travels outside of the US? On what grounds? Violation of human rights, violations of international law Personally, I'd have him arrested just for being a goddamned Bush-loving scumbag.

So you believe in arresting and sentencing people to prison simply because of their political views?
Yeah, that sounds like the Scott I remember from another board.

So you believe in arresting and sentencing people to prison simply because of their political views? Yeah, that sounds like the Scott I remember from another board. Why thank you. I do my best to piss off right-wing bloodthirsty pros like the sickos on the prodp board and the Kahanist kurveh who unfortunately shares my heritage. Perry has laughed in the face of human rights and I'd LOVE to see his ass in jail. He's been in the news for suggesting that Texas secede from the USA

Scott, you are choked with hate and arrogance.
I am a hesitant and extremely reluctant wowie who's married to an anti and (as a gypsy myself) has been racially abused on numerous boards as well as had pornographic fantasies written about me by my enemies.
The secession story has turned out to be a hoax by newsreaders desperate to fake a story.
I don't like Perry but at least he didn't let Foster get executed.
I'm actually politically LEFT wing and VERY liberal on human rights.
I belong to PTO and I regularly visit prisoners and try to help them.
Maybe you should try a thought experiment one time, Scott.
Consider it possible that you just might be wrong and that people you don't agree with aren't necessarily either deluded or evil.
Have you met your soul-brother Jumbo, by the way?

No..I usually don't feel like meeting people who constantly call me "fool." I do want to meet one person from the hate-board...the mayor of Gilroy, CA...actually, my fist wants to meet his face for what he said about my wife.

I don't believe I've ever called you a fool, Scott.
I do think you're bigoted, intolerant, racist, and arrogant but that's not calling you stupid.
I don't know who the mayor og Gilroy is but I DO know that there are good people on the hatenest as well as bad ones.
I hardly ever go there but there are kind and compassionate people on their like Chefmate, Pumpkinette, Michael Stoker and quite a few others.
The one I hate most of all is Californian. He is plain evil!

They are the same person. I finally got banned from there for referring to Fred Goldman as a money grubber who didn't give a crap about his kid BEFORE he was killed but saw his kid DEAD as a gold mine. THAT was bannable...but wishing my wife would have more illnesses was OK. Like I said..I ever see him in person..one punch is all its going to take.

Scott, thanks for telling me that.
I really loathe that bastard and only Mike C comes close to his level of evil on that board.
Believe it or not, I'm not that kind of pro.
I'm a very reluctant wowie.

If there's anything in homonyms he's NOTHING like Bob Dylan!
I have to admit I go there so rarely the only others I recognise are Doc, Charlene (I've never had any problems with her to be honest), and Elric who is (I think) yet another of Mike C's aliases. I don't know the others but then I hardly ever go there because Californian in particular always abuses me and I really can't understand why the staff there carry on like they do.
Even some of the antis on that board are pretty scummy - both Felix and Kay (especially her) have given me some venomous personal abuse.
Basically I only go there from time to time when I want to see what the few NICE people there are saying and doing.

I think at the end of the day you have to remember that EVERY message board is going to have good and bad people.
I don't know Doc but someone who I like and respect very much (Nobu) is a personal friend so that makes me feel that he must be basically OK.
I don't know Charlene but a LOT of people who I like and respect tell me she's a really sweet person.
Agaveman is another one who is a lovely bloke and OK he likes playing about but I've seen him show so much love and compassion you'd be amazed.
Jumbo is another one that people judge too quickly. He is one of the most loveable people I've ever met online.
Lisa is someone I don't like much but I have a lot of respect for. She's intelligent and open-minded and I can't help preferring her to a lot of the antis of the board.
Joe Phillips is another who is a LOT more complex than people give him credit for.
Then there's Anna who's just great!

I'm a very reluctant wowie. You were given more than enough chances to debate and participate on the board. You choose to simply be a virus on there and be of no value.. how is Kurt doing these days? Just look at my sig. (Dillon is Californian) Snotty you were given more than enough chances to debate and participate on the board.
