China is the number one country that uses capital punishment. They have executed more people in the last year then the rest of the world combined (Carnell). The reason they use capital punishment so often is that they have very strict laws. You can receive capital punishment for murder and drug trafficking, but also for petty theft and for even starting a forest fire. These are just some of the crimes that people have committed to receive capital punishment.
China has increased the number of criminal courts, lawyers and judges to handle all the cases that have come up (Davis). They did this so that they could get trials over with faster. Once a person has been sentenced they are executed almost immediately. China no longer does public executions in sophisticated cities like Beijing and Shanghai. However, they still do public executions in smaller cities.
A man from the southwestern province of Yunnan, China just recently received the death penalty for deliberately starting a forest fire. Many others have received the death penalty for even smaller crimes. "There's a Chinese saying that you should kill the chicken to scare the monkeys", says university graduate Yu Li. "We need that threat to be there - it's part of our culture" (Williams).
Iran is the second highest nation to use capital punishment. They hang people in public to make sure people know that if they commit a crime that is worthy of capital punishment they will receive it. People can receive the death penalty for murder and armed robbery. Once a person has been arrested they are taken to a summary court and sentenced. Iran doesn’t recognize the basic rights to attorney and representation of defendants in summary courts. Once an Islamic judge has passed the sentence, the person is executed almost immediately (Condemn Capital).
Other forms of capital punishment in Iran are stoning and flogging, which is when a person is wiped. Iran has just stopped the sentencing women to be stoned to death if she commits adultery (Muir). A person is sentences to flogged in public if they are caught drinking alcohol. A 25-year-old man was flogged at the capital Tehran for consuming and selling alcohol, which is forbidden under Islamic law (Iran Minister).
Many countries in Africa use capital punishment. They do not have the same kind of capital punishment that other countries have. In Nigeria women are stoned to death if they are found guilty for adultery or have pre marital sex. They do have the option to appeal the ruling. If a woman is pregnant and she found to be a virgin previously than she is just flogged. However, if she is married or divorced and has gotten pregnant by another man she is then sentenced to be stoned to death (Isaacs).
Another form of capital punishment in Nigeria, besides flogging is amputation. A young boy was found guilty of stealing money and he had his hand cut off (“Nigeria: Woman”). This form of capital punishment along with flogging and stoning are held up, under the Sharia criminal code. The Sharia code says that if a person is caught stealing they get their hand amputated, if a person is caught drinking alcohol there are publicly flogged, and if a women is found guilty of adultery or for having per marital sex her is sentence to be stoned to death.
There are only a few counties left that have capital punishment. Most of the world has banned capital punishment. They think it is wrong and they are tying to convince the countries with capital punishment to ban it.
