Maust status reports not ready
Aug. 16, 2005
Post-Tribune staff report
CROWN POINT — Reports by two mental-health professionals who were to render an opinion on whether David Maust, accused of killing three teens, is mentally capable of assisting in his own defense, were not ready for Monday’s hearing.
Defense attorney Thomas Vanes said both of the court-appointed experts talked with Maust, 51, but neither had filed reports that the defense wants in hand prior to a scheduled pre-trial conference in the death penalty case.
Vanes said one of the experts reviewed Maust’s mental health history but the second one hadn’t.
A pre-trial conference is scheduled for Sept. 14, and Lake Superior Court Judge Clarence Murray scheduled an Oct. 17 hearing to determine Maust’s mental competency in aiding the defense.
Maust is accused of killing Nick James, 19; James Raganyi, 16, and Michael Dennis, 13, whose bodies were found in December 2003 buried beneath concrete in a home he rented on Ash Avenue in Hammond.
