There I was thinking we are living in a far more cruel world than we ever did but to think that a couple of decades ago, a child was being tried like an adult for a crime. I cannot imagine something that appalling happening EVEN in this day and age. On the other hand, what we see time and again over here is hardly any better at the other extreme ; two 12 year old boys committed some horrific acts of torture and mutilation upon a 2 year old toddler and then left him to be decapitated, under the wheels of a train. They admitted to it, DNA established guilt, camera evidence established guilt and there was no question of their being totally off their trolley. So what do the authorities do? Give them the soft option of a young offenders' institute where they got to 'hang out' and play pool for a couple of years and then were released into society under assumed names and live off our taxes, whilst mucking about apparently with hard drugs. The middle road seems so hard for the authorities to take - too much thinking involved no doubt!!

In the USA they would make sure that both of them left prison with much better criminal skills, much more knowledge of how to avoid the police AND a pathological hatred of society. That teaches them! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Bulger

And you have to ask yourself this- what kind of mother leaves her 2 year old child outside a shopping center alone? That little boy was beautiful too, what a sickening story!

Perfectly normal and safe. Women leave babies in prams outside shops. It isn't the USA - much more trust there for strangers.

Perfectly normal and safe. Women leave babies in prams outside shops. It isn't the USA - much more trust there for strangers. We are talking about a 2 year old here! A 2 year old!! Well, if its normal and safe to leave a 2 year old alone outside a shopping center then they shouldn't be surprised when they lose there kids. I only feel sorry for the child in this case, and the childs father. I can see why her husband and her split up. If my husband left my child alone and this happened to her, I would leave my husband faster than his head would spin.
