Body found in Pecos River identified as that of missing woman Associated Press May 31, 2005 SAN ISIDRO, N.M. - The body of a missing Santa Fe teen has been found in the Pecos River, state police said. Tattoos and jewelry described by family and friends were used to identify the body of 18-year-old Jessica Hines, state police Lt. Jimmy Glascock said. The body was spotted Monday afternoon in a slower flowing part of the river by a property owner in the Pecos area. The state police dive team and Santa Fe County swift water rescuers pulled the body from the river late Monday night. The cause of death was not immediately known, Glascock said, and the body was sent to the office of the Medical Investigator in Albuquerque for an autopsy. Hines' body was found about 20 miles downstream from where her 1996 Saturn was found upside down in the river earlier this month. Hines was reported missing May 20 after friends who returned from a camping trip discovered she never made it home. Glascock said she was last seen May 18, when she apparently left the campsite after an argument with some members of the group. After her family reported her missing, state police Officer Matt Pilon drove up and down her presumed route, N.M. 63, looking for her car. He spotted a hubcap sticking out of the river. The car's ignition switch was turned to on when it was found, Glascock said. It had extensive body damage. www.freenewmexican.com/news/14297.html

Police Search For Woman Who Disappeared With Daughter And Infant She Was Babysitting Posted May 31 2005 A Pulaski County woman who was babysitting her own daughter and the daughter of a friend disappeared Friday with both children. Police say Brandy Bowman, 22, hasn't been heard from since Friday afternoon. To make matters worse, Bowman was caring for her own daughter, 3-year-old Josphianna, and 2-month-old Breanna Hughes. "This girl is missing with these two small children," said Kim Lower, Bowman's mother. "No one has heard from her, no one has seen her. It's like she just vanished into thin air." Lower said after picking up the children on Friday, Bowman was supposed to return with the two children for a cook out Sunday afternoon. She never showed. The ordeal for Breanna's mother Crystal has been so difficult she even required medical attention. Family members have been searching for the three since Saturday morning, after Bowman stopped answering her cell-phone. "I feel in my heart that there has been foul play here," said Lower. "Because this is not like my daughter Brandy to do this, and take off and be gone for days." Police say they could not issue an Amber Alert because too much time had passed between the disappearance the missing persons report that was filed. Anyone with information on this case is asked to call Kentucky State Police at (606) 878-6622. www.lex18.com/Global/story.asp?S=3410970 A Pulaski County woman who disappeared Friday while babysitting her own daughter and the daughter of a friend returned to her home Tuesday, and while the children are safe, police have charged her with custodial interference. Police say Brandy Bowman, 22, who hadn't been heard from since Friday afternoon, said she had been in Irvine, Kentucky after her car broke down. Bowman was caring for her own daughter, 3-year-old Josphianna, and 2-month-old Breanna Hughes. Bowman had a verbal confrontation with Hughes' mother, Crystal Pond, upon her return. Police say Bowman claims that she was supposed to babysit for Pond's daughter until Sunday, but that her car had broken down and she had no way to call and let Pond know she would be unable to return the child Sunday. After further investigation conducted by the Pulaski County major crimes task force, Bowman was charged with custodial interference, a felony. Police say the case remains open pending further investigation. Bowman's mother, Kim Lower, said after picking up the children on Friday, Bowman was supposed to return with the two children for a cook out Sunday afternoon. She never showed. The ordeal for Pond had been so difficult she even required medical attention. Family members had been searching for the three since Saturday morning, after Bowman stopped answering her cell phone. Missing woman found By Associated Press May 31, 2005 GRAND JUNCTION — A woman who spent three days in rocky wilderness in western Colorado without any food or water after an argument with her ex-husband was found Tuesday afternoon. Laurilee Anne Luebke, 36, was dehydrated and possibly suffering from heat stroke when she was found by Mesa County Search and Rescue teams in an area called Horse Mesa south of Grand Junction, Mesa County Sheriff's spokeswoman Susan McBurney said. She was about five miles from the nearest road, in an area McBurney described as "very dry, hilly and rocky." A helicopter picked her up about 40 minutes after rescuers established voice contact, and she then was taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction. McBurney did not know her condition early Tuesday night. Luebke was driving with her ex-husband in the area Saturday morning. They apparently had an argument, the woman got out of the car and the couple became separated, McBurney said. Luebke was wearing a T-shirt, Capri pants and sandals. "She did not have any water. She had no food," McBurney said. "She was not prepared for the elements." Luebke was reported missing Sunday afternoon when she did not show up for work. McBurney said Luebke's ex-husband was helpful during the search. National Weather Service meteorologist Joe Ramey said temperatures reached 85 degrees over the weekend in the area, then cooled off Monday, when thunderstorms moved in. At night, temperatures dropped to below 50 degrees. McBurney said Luebke was asked how she survived without any food or water, but was too weak to respond. rockymountainnews.com/drmn/state/ar...3820103,00.html

Police: 2 Teens Confess To Killing Man Missing Since May Authorities Believe Body Found In Woods Is That Of Victim POSTED: 4:19 pm EDT June 1, 2005 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Police believe a body found in the woods near Dinsmore is that of a 22-year-old man who has been missing for nearly a month. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office discovered the human remains Friday after new developments in their missing persons investigation led them to the site off Old Kings Road North. William Tutton disappeared May 4, leaving behind two children and his fiancee. "I had hoped he was coming home, that maybe he was just out," Jennifer Wilson said. But Wilson told Channel 4's Jennifer Bauer that when her soon-to-be-groom never came home that night, she knew something bad had happened. Tutton was last seen carrying a large amount of cash and a gun, and police believe he was involved in a drug deal. Foul play was suspected in his disappearance, but there seemed to be no breaks in the case -- until last week. That's when Daniel Alvarez, 16, and Eric Grooms, 18, confessed to killing Tutton, according to police reports. Officers said the pair brought Tutton to a home on the Westside, where they shot him twice in the back of the head and once in the face before dumping the body to cover-up the crime. Alvarez and Grooms have been charged with murder and are being held without bond at the City of Jacksonville Pre-trial Detention Facility. Jason Corbett, 24, was also charged with accessory after the fact for allegedly disposing of the murder weapon and tampering with evidence. According to police, he melted the gun. "I do want to see them get what they deserve," Wilson said. "Every one of them." Police have not released the name of a third suspect who is still on the run. The body has not yet been positively identified, but Wilson expects a confirmation of her worst fears within the next few days. In the meantime, Wilson is focusing on her 2-year-old daughter, Ashley, whose birthday is Friday. She also has a 4-month-old named Ashton. "I got to get through this for her, for both of my kids," Wilson said. "But she's the one that's going to remember." www.news4jax.com/news/4556623/detail.html

Man's body found 42 years ago is identified By Deanna Boyd Star-Telegram Staff Writer Posted on Thu, Jun. 02, 2005 FORT WORTH - A homicide victim whose skeletal remains were found 42 years ago in a creek bed near the Benbrook dam finally has a name. Major case Detective Bryan Jamison said DNA tests have confirmed that the bones are that of Kenneth Bennett Glaze, a 35-year-old man who disappeared from Fort Worth in 1963. "It was a critical first step," Jamison said of the identification. "I'm glad it happened so quick so we can get down to the business of solving this crime." The remains, found Dec. 1, 1963, in unincorporated Tarrant County, were initially thought by authorities to be those of a woman. Investigators released a sketch of the woman's probable features and received tips, but to no avail. The bones were then sealed away in the Fort Worth police property room, where they remained for more than four decades. But last winter, crime lab employees stumbled upon the skeleton while going through evidence and turned it over to Dr. Dana Austin, a forensic anthropologist with the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office. Austin reanalyzed the bones and determined that they were, in fact, those of a man. Jamison said the man died from two gunshot wounds. Forensic artist Suzanne Baldon made a facial reconstruction sculpture of the victim, a photo of which was released to the media in May. After the media exposure, Jamison received tips by people who recalled Glaze had been missing around that time. Through one of those tips, police eventually identified a cousin of Glaze in South Texas, he said. Jamison said the cousin sent him several items that she had found in her attic concerning Glaze, including pictures and Army paperwork. "I took one of the pictures she sent and scanned it in and put it side-by-side by the sculpture," Jamison said. "It was very close. We were pretty confident this DNA was going to work out." Jamison said the identification was made after comparing DNA from the cousin with DNA extracted from the victim's teeth. Glaze, a manager of a testing firm, disappeared Aug. 23, 1963, without money, extra clothes or his glasses, according to an article published in the Star-Telegram in August 1963. He was last seen leaving a west Fort Worth restaurant, driving east on Camp Bowie Boulevard. His car was found abandoned two days later on the West Freeway between Forest Park Boulevard and University Drive, the article stated. Jamison said he is interested in talking to anybody who knew Glaze, worked with him or has information about his disappearance. Anyone with information can call Jamison at (817) 392-4440. www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/news/11795713.htm

Remains confirmed to be missing boy
Thursday, June 2, 2005 By ELENA ARNOLD / The Press-Enterprise
Authorities today announced that the child's remains found last weekend in the San Bernardino National Forest are those of 9-year-old David Gonzalez, who disappeared from a Big Bear area campground almost a year ago.
The identification, made through dental records, is a bittersweet relief for David's family, who has spent more than 300 days wondering if their lost little boy was cold, lonely or even still alive.
"I know where is David now," said his father, Jose Gonzalez. "He is in heaven."
The circumstances of David's death remain a mystery.
"We have a lot of unanswered questions," said Chip Patterson, San Bernardino County Sheriff's spokesman.
A forensic pathologist and anthropologist will examine the bones Friday in an attempt to determine what happened to the boy.
Speculation has ranged from abduction by a sexual predator to a mountain lion attack, with few clues to sway investigators towards either theory.
For nine days after David disappeared, search-and-rescue volunteers, expert trackers and concerned citizens combed the forest looking for him. Helicopters and tracking dogs were also used in the search.
"It was one of the biggest search-and-rescue operations I've ever experienced," said Patterson. "On the next-to-the-last day, we had more than 200 people out there."
The search, however, yielded nothing - not a shoe, not a piece of clothing, not a sign of struggle.
"It was very frustrating. Throughout the search and rescue, we didn't find anything to suggest what happened to David," Patterson said.
In the days following David's disappearance, detectives contacted the 37 registered sex offenders in the Big Bear area, with no success. An investigation into other sex offenders in San Bernardino County who had been convicted of abducting children of a similar age and type also yielded nothing.
Officials hope the bones will provide some clue. About 25 percent of the skeleton, including the skull, some vertebrae and a long bone were recovered. Searchers also found some other non-human materials near the site, which might be related. Investigators declined to say what those materials were.
Several aspects of the find lead authorities to believe that David could have been attacked by a mountain lion.
"The condition and location of where the remains were found are consistent with a mountain lion," said Doug Updike, senior wildlife biologist for California Department of Fish and Game.
A mountain lion would attack quickly and quietly, Updike said. It would take its prey to an area similar to the ravine where the bones were found and possibly cover the victim with limbs and other vegetation.

8-Year-Old Missing For One Day Found Safe Boy Found At Halfway House UPDATED: 7:03 pm EDT June 3, 2005 SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE -- An 8-year-old boy who was missing for nearly a day after he left a southwest Miami-Dade drug store has been found at a halfway house. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement put out a statewide missing child alert Friday for Kayle Coutte, 8, who was last seen leaving the Walgreens in the 100 block of Southwest 114 Avenue Thursday evening alone. Coutte was found Friday afternoon at The Bridge, a Miami-Dade halfway house for runaways. Surveillance tape shows him wandering around store for about six minutes just before 6 p.m. Coutte lives just around the corner from the store with his aunt. "I'm just relieved and glad they found him safe," Frankie Thomas, a relative, said. Miami-Dade police said Coutte's aunt and other relatives called them just before midnight Thursday, prompting a canvass of the area Friday. Police had searched the Cutler Ridge Mall Friday after receiving a report that Coutte was spotted there. A Good Samaritan had found the boy near Miami International Airport and took him to the halfway house. Police said they believe Coutte was trying to make his way to Georgia, where he has family. The Department of Children and Families may investigate the case, NBC 6's Michael Williams reported. www.nbc6.net/news/4567413/detail.html

Marina del Rey hiker found dead in Ventura County The Associated Press Updated Monday, June 6, 2005 OJAI, Calif. (AP) - A hiker who had been missing a week was found dead in a rugged area on the north face of Mount Pinos in the Los Padres National Forest, authorities said. A Ventura County search and rescue team found the body of Michael Hugo Miller, 61, on Sunday after a weeklong search of popular Southern California hiking spots, Sgt. Tim Hagel said. Miller's family reported the Marina del Rey resident missing on May 28 when he didn't return from a hiking trip. Family members didn't know where Miller had been hiking but found his car in the parking lot of the Mount Pinos Recreation Area on Friday after an extensive search, Hagel said. A high angle rescue team located Miller's body on an "extremely rugged" part of the mountain about 90 miles northwest of Los Angeles, Hagel said. He had apparently fallen several hundred feet to his death, he said. The area was so steep the search team had to be lifted out by helicopter after locating the body, the sheriff's department said. An autopsy was planned. www.fresnobee.com/state_wire/story/...-11417636c.html
