Maurice Mason is on Death Row in Mansfield Ohio, and is awaiting the Court's decision on his final appeal. More than likely a serious execution date will be set for him in 2005.
Mr. Mason was convicted of aggravated murder in a case that involved the rape and murder of a 19-year-old woman, Robin Dennis, in February 1993, and because Mr. Mason was having a sexual relationship with this woman, his DNA was found.
But Mr. Mason has always claimed to be innocent of this crime, although he has a long criminal record involving drug-related offenses and burglary as a result of growing up in a family where both parents used and trafficked in drugs, giving both marijuana and cocaine to their son as a child, and bringing him into the 'family business' when he was around 12.
The fact that Robin Dennis was found clutching blonde hair, when Maurice Mason is an African-American with curly black hair (and much other evidence) appears to have been ignored by all and sundry, but now there is further evidence to support his innocence.
Mr. Mason has just been sent a copy of the Coroner's report on the death of Mrs. Dennis, which he had not previously seen, of which he has sent me a photocopy. The report states that the date of death was February 13th, at which time Mr. Mason was in jail on a parole violation.
Robin Dennis went missing on February 8th 1993, and Maurice Mason was picked up for questioning and subsequently arrested and jailed for a parole violation on February 12th. According to the Coroner's Report Robin Dennis was not killed until the next day February 13th, at which time Mr. Mason was still in jail, and clearly could not have committed the murder.
Being black, indigent and having a criminal record, Mr. Mason does not have many people batting for him, and I fear that if something is not done soon, Maurice Mason will be the next innocent man to die for a crime he did not commit.
In October 2003 Maurice 'Reese' Mason found lumps in his armpit and groin and was told by the doctor at MAN CI that he would have to go to the hospital in Columbus for medical tests.
After discovering more lumps he was finally taken to Columbus in March 2004 where after performing some tests he was told that he would have to come back for more to be done
Finally after several more months he was taken back for a cat scan and other tests early this month (September 2004). We are now waiting on the results.I am appalled that it took almost a year for these very necessary tests to be done, is this usual for men on the row in MAN CI?

This isn't unusual at all for prisoners to receive inadequate, inferior, and delayed medical care. If anything, it seems to be the norm.Re: Another Innocent On DR Post by judywaits4u on Dec 10, 2005, 11:08am

I had to get in touch with Jeb to force the DOC to get my friend the urgently needed medical treatment that she required.
Love and hugs, Judy

Kathy-
do you know anything more about this?
Re: Another Innocent On DR Post by kathy on Jan 5, 2006, 11:46am
Maggie,
Sorry I just saw your reply. I know quite a bit more about it. His trial was a real circus! He had an all white jury. Several people reported to the judge that they heard some of these jurors using racial slurs toward him. The jury dead locked and the judge ordered them to go back and get a verdict! The girls husband had blond hair. Her husband is also known to have taken a man out into a field and beat him, leaving him for dead. His wife was found in a abandoned shed in a field, beat to death. A wittiness, the guy that was beaten was denied testimony. Ant expert wittiness's were also denied to Mr Mason. I t just goes on and on!!! Hi Moo,
I have a copy of the coroners report sitting right here. I'm not real sure about the appeals, I know that he just lost one. His last letter said that his Lawyers were filing again. I don't know how many are left. I will ask him.

Kathy
Why on EARTH would he lose his appeal? Why was it lost? Was any of this evidence presented at his appeal?Re: Another Innocent On DR Post by kathy on Jan 7, 2006, 11:58pm
I have come to the conclusion that Appeals are merely a formality. They really have no intentions of setting someone free.
There is a lot about this case that I don't know yet. I find out more with each bunch of papers he sends me. So far it is enough to make me want to vomit!!Re: Another Innocent On DR Post by abiraballari on Jan 8, 2006, 12:51pm
Well I happen to live in Columbus and I'm from Franklin County.....what can I do to possibly help?Re: Another Innocent On DR Post by kathy on Jan 8, 2006, 8:27pm
Abi, Bless your heart! Thank you for offering. I'm not real sure what we need to do. We are waiting on word from the innocence project to see if they have accepted his case. How far are you from Mansfield? I know he would love to have a visitor. No one ever goes to see him. He would have to get you on his visiting list. I'm not sure how to do that. But he will know. While we appreciate Kathy re-posting the information supplied by Maurice Mason's wife Caroline, a great deal more information on the case and up-to-date news can be found on Reese's website -
And anyone who would like to help in any way can contact me or Caroline Mason via the website, because as requested by Reese himself, Kathy is no longer involved in his case.
Caroline spent three months in Ohio this year visiting Reese and intends moving over to Mansfield in the near future.

These boards are really great. There are a lot of people here with a lot to say, and that's really refreshing to see. I thought I'd let everyone know of a site that's fairly new which shows a lot of potential, especially for helping people on death row who have been wrongly accused. Sorry if you see this post a few more times, but it's hard to find a place with as many people who are as interested in such a topic of discussion...
The Tribeca Network, a Manhattan-based user-generated Zeitgeist community, has announced the launch of dotconnectors.net, an interactive portal for the scrutiny and debate of criminal cases involving possible miscarriage of justice.
The site invites users to post available information about such cases, to which the greater community can add public records, witness accounts, court testimony and forensic evidence, as well as insight, opinion and information that may offer new paths to alternate conclusions. Dotconnector's first case, State vs. Reed, centers around Rodney Reed, a 40-year-old man on death row in a Texas prison for a rape and murder many believe he did not commit.
That Reed is once again in the public eye is due largely to the efforts of Austin-based journalist Jordan Smith and filmmakers Frank Bustoz and Ryan Polomski, whose award-winning documentary State vs. Reed, helped to bring about a renewed evidentiary hearing. The film can be seen in its entirely on tribeca.net -- a portal of Tribeca Network, the parent company of dotconnectors.net.
